原作:Josh R ogin原載:《新聞周刊》網址:http://w w w.thedailybeast.com/n e w sw e e k/20 13/0 7/31/b ag h dad- s-ma n - in sid e - th e - b e ltw a y- ira q - s-n e w - a mb a s s a d o r- to - th e - u - s -lukm an-faily .htm l編譯:林徵道迷你倉沙田

Man found asleep in car outside of McDonald's reminds of perils of drinking and driving
Source: The Eagle, Bryan, TexasAug. 23--Police arrested an 18-year-old Sugar Land man after finding him asleep at the wheel while at a McDonald's drive-through.He was charged with his first DWI -- a Class B misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine up to $2,000.As the start of fall classes approaches, police expect to make more alcohol-related arrests for various reasons, including the fact that students will be getting away from their parents, the lack of public transportation in the area and the increase in business at Northgate, College Station Police Sgt. Jason Summers said.So far this year, College Station police have made almost 250 DWI arrests. That's on pace to reach the 2012 figure of 464 DWI arrests. The incident at the McDonald's on George Bush Drive didn't result in injuries, but the driver showed signs of intoxication, according to the police report.Officers arrived at the scene around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday to find that a firefighter had placed the car in park and turned it off while the driver slept with his foot on the brake, according to the arrest report. The driver, seemingly unaware that his car had been shut off, tried to turn the vehicle off when the officer made contact with him, police said.He was taken to the Brazos County Jail and was released Wednesday after posting $3,000 bail.According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the total cost of a first-time DWI can be close to $17,000 once court costs, bail, impoundment, attorney fees, license reinstatement fees, alcohol education classes, damages and m儲存dical fees are taken into account.Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Alcohol Awareness Program, through a TxDOT grant, and Texas A&M Student Life put together alcohol educational programs for students that include discussions on what constitutes one drink, factors that affect blood alcohol content, alcohol poisoning and more. But despite all the information available, TxDOT reported 7,096 car crashes in Texas last year involving college-aged drivers under the influence, which resulted in more than 2,100 serious injuries and 231 deaths. In College Station, Bobbi Brooks, program manager for AgriLife Alcohol Awareness Program Watch UR BAC, recommends people get a free ride from CARPOOL, a student-run organization offering rides Thursday through Saturday from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters or call a cab, which "is still cheaper than a first-time DWI."TxDOT is also testing a new app that uses Facebook events to help people find sober drivers for a ride. The P.A.S.S (Person Appointed to Stay Sober) app will be tested at the University of North Texas, Midwestern State University and the University of Texas at Brownsville."It starts with the people doing the drinking," Summers said. "Anybody, it doesn't matter if you're an incoming freshman or 100 years old and living in College Station all your life ... you've got to make a plan, before you go out and partake in drinking, to have a sober ride."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Eagle (Bryan, Texas) Visit The Eagle (Bryan, Texas) at .theeagle.com Distributed by MCT Information Services新蒲崗迷你倉

The Dodgers-Red Sox trade, one year later
Source: Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, Calif.self storageAug. 22--The Dodgers and Boston Red Sox will meet today as first-place teams, exactly how the general managers and owners of both teams drew it up when they engineered the most expensive trade in baseball history on Aug. 25, 2012.Nearly a year later, both franchises can trace their change in fortunes to the day when nine players and more than a quarter-million dollars in contracts changed hands."People looked at it as 'Wow!'" Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said. "It had a lot of surprise from coast to coast, really."The precarious process of trading players in August -- seeing the superstars pass unclaimed through waivers, pitcher Josh Beckett making an exception on his no-trade clause -- would make a Rube Goldberg machine jealous. That it worked so well for both the Red Sox and Dodgers is making 28 other major-league teams jealous. It was a trade few teams could afford to make. But for the Dodgers, who could gain more than $7 billion out of a regional network deal signed with Time Warner in January, money might have been the least risky aspect of the trade. The biggest risk was the players they acquired at the cost of young talent. There was veteran utilityman Nick Punto, a fun-loving Orange County kid at heart despite his age (34) and .200 batting average at the time of the trade; Beckett, a former phenom flamethrower whose support among Sox fans was wearing out faster than his right arm; Carl Crawford, a fleet-footed left fielder who couldn't stay healthy in the prime of his career; and Adrian Gonzalez, the soft-spoken slugger who came closest to a sure thing for the Dodgers. What each had in common one year ago was overshadowed by what they didn't have: the collective capacity to alter the fate of a struggling franchise."We were all pretty happy to be coming this way to a pennant race," Gonzalez said. "You know where Boston was at. We came to a really good situation."On the morning of the trade, the Red Sox were 60-66. The Dodgers were 68-58. Punto, Beckett and Gonzalez -- Crawford was relaxing at his home in Houston, having undergone elbow surgery two days before -- took a celebratory picture on their chartered flight out of Boston. Punto published it on Twitter for the world to see. They were free, united in purpose, and smiling broadly."That," Punto said, "was genuine."?Colletti wouldn't allow himself to envision the moment back in April 2012, when he took the idea of acquiring Gonzalez to Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington. Gonzalez was the Dodgers' primary target all along, going back to the first baseman's tenure in San Diego from 2006-10.But Cherington wasn't interested in dealing Gonzalez, who led the Sox in RBIs (117) and batting average (.338) in 2011. A couple weeks into the new season, "El Titan" was doing everything except hitting home runs out of Fenway Park. Colletti and Cherington touched base again in July, but Gonzalez's stock was only rising further then; he hit .372 for the month.By mid-August the Red Sox were falling out of contention and Cherington was willing to deal. While the framework of the trade was coming together -- the Dodgers would have to acquire an unpopular Beckett and an injured Crawford -- it was getting expensive. So with Dodgers president Stan Kasten in Denver for the quarterly owners' meeting, he met with Red Sox principal owner John Henry and team president Larry Lucchino to discuss the financial aspect of the deal, a "middle step" in the process. The Red Sox would agree to pay $3.9 million of Gonzalez's salary each year through 2015.Colletti knew what he would be getting in Gonzalez, having crossed paths often when Gonzalez was a Padre. He consulted with Dodgers manager Don Mattingly about the other players, particularly Crawford, whom Mattingly saw often when he was a coach with the Yankees and Crawford was playing in Tampa Bay."It happens all the time during the trade deadline," Mattingly said. "You're talking about numerous guys, different teams -- 'what do you think about this guy, what do you think about that guy, we're looking at this.' They don't tell you everything they're doing, they just ask you about different guys so you have an idea that something could be going on. Then either it happens or it doesn't."?When word of the trade first leaked, Gonzalez wasn't listening."At this point in my career I don't listen to anything," he said. "The rumors were ... just because we all went through waivers and were claimed by the Dodgers."Not Punto. He was listening intently beginning Aug. 24, when the possible trade was suddenly the talk of Boston."I got to the ballpark around 2 like I normally do, and the trade rumors happened really quick," he said. "From 2 o'clock to 10 o'clock at night, that all went pretty quick. Everybody was just kind of sitting on eggshells wondering if it was going to happen. And we had a game to play."Gonzalez was pulled from the Red Sox迷你倉lineup moments before first pitch. Punto didn't play, either. Boston beat Kansas City 4-3.Crawford was taking it all in from his couch in Houston. He was watching SportsCenter with his mother, brother, and a few other family members when he first saw his name lumped in the trade."I was just hoping that it wasn't a joke," Crawford said. "I was like, man, I need this to be true."?There was one hangup on the Dodgers' end. First baseman James Loney and minor leaguers Ivan DeJesus and Allen Webster all cleared waivers, while minor-league outfielder Jerry Sands and pitcher Rubby De La Rosa were claimed by other teams. But the deal didn't fall through. De La Rosa and Sands became "players to be named later" and the trade was submitted to the league. When it became official Aug. 25, Colletti finally allowed himself to breathe."I try to prepare myself, and our staff tries to prepare itself, for every inevitability knowing that we don't know what's around the next corner, whether it's on the field or off the field," he said. "We try to do the best we can with whatever scenario we're faced with."He called Crawford to deliver the news. It wasn't a joke."You know, with the ($142 million) contract, I didn't think I could ever get out" of Boston, Crawford said. "I thought I was going to be stuck there for seven years."?Gonzalez does not wear his emotions on his sleeve, but even he couldn't deny the joy of his new surroundings. He hit a home run in his first at-bat as a Dodger the night of Aug. 25, the high point of an 8-2 win over Miami at the end of a long day. Gonzalez had a mechanical flaw in his swing at the time and didn't hit another home run for 26 games, but the smashing debut was an appropriate metaphor. Off the field, he hooked up with Padres Contra El Cancer (Spanish for "fathers against cancer"), a nonprofit organization based in Toluca Lake, and has donated his time and money to other local charities since. To him, Los Angeles feels more like home than Boston."It's the stuff you can do outside of showing up to the ballpark," said Gonzalez, whose childhood was split between San Diego and Tijuana. "Being able to eat good Mexican, being around Mexicans, Mexican-Americans -- that's my culture."His numbers (16 home runs, 77 RBIs, .298 batting average) are more good than great, but Gonzalez has been healthy and consistent since Opening Day, something few Dodgers can claim. Gonzalez has batted third or fourth in every game, and has a chance to become the Dodgers' best first baseman since Steve Garvey.Crawford and Punto have been pleasant surprises. Crawford's elbow hasn't been an issue at the plate or in left field. He is still close enough to his prime at age 32 to be an effective leadoff hitter, with a .350 on-base percentage and 11 steals in 15 attempts.Punto's infectious hustle has led to 11 infield hits, including four on bunts. His defensive versatility (Punto plays three of the four infield positions) and ability to switch-hit make him an attractive option off the bench. Only five Dodgers have appeared in more games.Beckett is the lone disappointment this year, having pitched only eight games before being sidelined with a nerve issue that required thoracic outlet surgery in July.?On the other end of the trade, Loney left Boston as a free agent to sign with Tampa Bay. Sands and DeJesus left in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates. De La Rosa and Webster have appeared in 11 games with the Red Sox this year, but at 24 and 23 years old, respectively, it's too soon to say what kind of an impact each will have in Boston.More important to the Red Sox was the money they saved. They re-signed David Ortiz and Jacoby Ellsbury, and lured Shane Victorino, Ryan Dempster and Mike Napoli as free agents.Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling, who will be part of ESPN's broadcast team at Dodger Stadium on Sunday, said without the trade the Red Sox wouldn't be as financially flexible and able to develop their prospects."Boston found somebody willing to take all that -- that was the perfect storm," Schilling said. The Boston Globe wrote last year that the trade, for the Red Sox, was about "realizing that building a baseball team is more important than building a brand."For the Dodgers, it was about both."It worked out for where we were as a franchise and what we were trying to do in the short term," Kasten said, "to provide us the foundation of credibility we needed with our fanbase, and to give us time to build in the long term.""I think it showed everybody that this ownership group was real," Colletti added. "Its desire to win and to put as good a club on the field as possible as quick as possible showed not only with that trade, but that was the exclamation point to the earlier deals."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Inland Valley Daily Bulletin (Ontario, Calif.) New trash bins bad news for Roanoke Valley bears
Source: The Roanoke Times, Va.self storageAug. 23--One night more than a year ago, Garrett Thompson was in his garage when he heard a loud thump outside. His house in the King's Crest subdivision in Roanoke County is in a safe area without a lot of commotion, so he took a flashlight and went to investigate the noise. About 20 feet in front him stood a 400-pound black bear, rummaging through his garbage like it was an all-you-can-eat buffet.Thompson nervously shined the light at the confused creature as they looked at each other. Then he screamed, but it was the bear that ended up running away."He's a massive bear, but he's afraid of anything," he said. This wasn't the first time Thompson was visited by a furry nighttime guest, and it wasn't the last. For Thompson and many of his neighbors near Hanging Rock, black bear visits come with the mortgage. Every summer the animals arrive in droves. Sometimes it's more than one. Sometimes it's the same bear returning year after year for a late-night feast. Many of the bears seem to have memorized the nights before trash pickup, when hundreds of county residents unknowingly serve up a bear potluck at the ends of their driveways. In the morning, when trash litters their yards, the annoyance sets in.By far the largest complaint about black bears logged to the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is related the animals' continual rifling of residents' trash cans. Though it's hard to gauge, the complaints may have hit a peak this year in Roanoke County, an area with a high black bear population."It has been a busy summer. I can't put a number on it yet, but it seems to be a busier year than usual," said Jim Bowman, a biologist with the state game department who handles complaints from Roanoke County. As residential communities have grown in Roanoke County, so has the black bear population, leading to an increase in encounters over the past few years.Complaints about bears in trash have been persistent enough this year that Roanoke County accepted a $10,000 grant from the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to spend on bear-proof garbage cans. The bins will be made available, for a fee, to county residents who have grown tired of ursine encounters. The cost will likely be about $125 per household, and the bins could be available this fall, according to General Services Director Anne Marie Green.Green estimated that during bear season, her office gets two to three calls a week from residents about trash can break-ins. She said the bears seem to be making a comeback as humans encroach on their habitat. She said she hopes the new trash bins will help quell the complaints. The grant for the bins is the first of its kind in Virginia. Jaime Sajecki, leader of the game department's Black Bear Project, said they wanted to test of the success of the trash cans in Roanoke County because the area presents a unique challenge."The county itself is surrounded by a great bear habitat," she said.Since 2007, she has worked with the county on its black bear issues. Last year, made aware of the high number of bear encounters, officials from the state and the county met and the idea for the trash bins was born.Sajecki said that from 2001 to 2009 the black bear population grew about 9 percent statewide. Since 2009, a branch of the game department has been studying parts of Roanoke County to see if the population is continuing to increase. The study will take several years to yield results. Many people, including Sajecki, have the impression that the population has grown.According to Bowman, many of t迷你倉e complaints from Roanoke County come from communities along the lower slopes of Fort Lewis Mountain and the Interstate 81 corridor."We have received numerous calls from different residents primarily in the Glenvar vicinity this summer, while complaints last year were much more prevalent from residential communities closer to Hanging Rock and also south of Roanoke city," he said.Complaints also come in every year from more rural communities, such as those near Catawba, he said.Bowman concurred that Roanoke County residents' chief black bear complaint is the mess they make of trash bins. However, the complaints come so often and through so many channels that there is no comprehensive list recording the numbers. Not everyone complains about their beastly neighbors.Roanoke County resident Heather Alvarez lives in a two-story home nestled near woodlands in the Hanging Rock area, where she enjoys the peace and quiet of living away from the city. She lived in Miami for 30 years before coming to Roanoke County, and the first time she saw a bear stroll through her yard to get to her bird feeder it scared her to death. But after five years of routine bear visits every summer, she came to enjoy their company. Now she is a self-described black bear afficionado with bear trinkets and decor all over her house."I don't know what everyone is afraid of. Yes, they are a nuisance when they get in the trash," Alvarez said. "But we built into their backyard."Alvarez, who said she is interested in getting one of the new trash cans, said part of the reason her family moved to rural Virginia was to be around more nature and less concrete. The bears, deer and other wildlife that trek through her property are, she feels, unique to her home.Linda Watts, who has lived in the Bennett Springs area since 1998, has seen dozens of bears sniffing around her front porch over the years. Every summer, she and her husband go into "bear mode" and begin putting their trash in a shed and putting away the bird feeder, which Watts calls "bear popcorn."Watts said she is glad the county is taking steps to help keep the bears out of the neighborhood."If you've ever picked up trash and if you've got the money, [the trash bins] are a good investment," she said.Sajecki said the grant for bear-proof trash containers is more than just an effort to control litter. If bears don't think there is food, then they will stay away. This decreases other kinds of bear issues, like property damage.Black bears are not known for hurting people. Bowman said that if you see a black bear, the best thing to do is yell; they will usually run. Cats and dogs can even scare them off .Bowman said bears come to associate homes with feeding, and that it's best to break their habits early, while they still fear people. It is illegal to feed bears, and people can be cited if they have something on their property that repeatedly attracts bears and they do nothing about it.However, bears will continue to trek through residential neighborhoods for chow as long as anyone leaves garbage unattended, which is why the county and DGIF are pushing the trash can pilot program."I have interest in it, but the reality is I will bring the garbage in the garage," said Thompson, the King's Crest resident. "I don't feed the bears, but I don't mind having them. That is why I moved out to the county -- close enough to town, but to be near the wildlife."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Roanoke Times (Roanoke, Va.) Van Wert County the first certified connected community
Source: The Lima News, OhioAug. 22--VAN WERT -- After joining other county officials in receiving an honor as the first county in Ohio to be certified a connected community, Commissioner Stan Owens said going through the process was a no-brainer."We see this as a means of potentially promoting economic development," Owens said.On top of that, working with Connect Ohio to assess Van Wert County's strengths and weaknesses in connecting to the Internet and the availability of services and information, Owens said the whole process was free other than local officials spending time on the imitative."We're trying to find ways to save money and cut cost. We see some definite potential here," Owens said.As an example of putting technology to use, Owens said Van Wert has switched to video arraignments. Instead of hauling defendants from the jail to court for what amounts to a short but required hearing, it's done by video from the jail to the court, Owens said. While the majority of the 29,000 residents of Van Wert County have access to the Internet in one way or another, the overall goal is to improve services, which includes access and higher speeds, among many of the possibilities, officials said. The assessment process required Van Wert County to achieve a certain score, digital literacy, amd access to public computer centers. They also identified people most likely to struggle to have access to the Internet, said Jeff Beebe of Connect Ohio. The group also idenmini storageified the infrastructure for technology, assets and resources as well as establish goals such as a redundant infrastructure network so if one line should go down a household or business still would be connected through a second line or another means.Van Wert County has 18 broadband providers and 187 business-related websites. The county also has centers that employers can send their workers to for training on the Internet or software.Connect Ohio Executive Director Stu Johnson said one of the big goals is to provide quality Internet connection service to people at an affordable price. There's a growing demand for high-speed download capability and better service."The demand is there. It's never ending," Johnson said. "Broadband is no more different infrastructure than roads and sewers."As an example, Johnson said ways that seemed unimaginable are being used to connect to the Internet, such as wristwatches and glasses."There's no end. It's not build it and they will come. The demand is here now," he said.Johnson said major providers are investing billions in Internet infrastructure knowing the future is limitless."It will be directed to communities that get it. Communities that understand it. Communities that embrace it. This report tells the rest of the world that Van Wert is ready to play," Johnson said.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Lima News (Lima, Ohio) Visit The Lima News (Lima, Ohio) at .limaohio.com Distributed by MCT Information Servicesself storage

50 injured in tour bus crash on 210 Freeway
Source: Daily News, Los AngelesAug. 22--MONROVIA -- The Los Angeles County Fire Department reports that an overturned casino-bound bus injured 50 people about 10 a.m. on the eastbound 210 Freeway just west of Irwindale Avenue. The department lists 39 minor injuries and 11 delayed injuries, which means people who are disoriented or unable to walk, according to a fire department dispatcher. Fifty people were on the bus, according to California Highway Patrol. Medical helicopters airlifted nine people, but the extent of their injuries is unknown. The cause of the crash also remains unclear, but investigators have shifted their focus to gathering evidence now that all of the injured passengers have left the scene, according to Rick Quintero, a California Highway Patrol spokesperson."Initially the primary focus is on the injured parties," Quintero said. "Now it is just a matter of gathering the evidence on the scene as well as turning over that charter bus and opening up those lanes."The westbound lanes have since reopened completely and the eastbound carpool lane is now moving again, according to Saul Gomez, a CHP public information officer."It all depends on how much evidence we have to gather, once we get that information, we'll try to open as many lanes as possible," Gomez said. He expected the lane to remain at least partially closed for several hours.Early reports indicate a semi-truck became involved either indirectly or directly in the accident, according to Gomez. The driver stopped to help after the bus tipped over, Gomez said. The bus tipped over after going into an embankment off the right shoulder of the eastbound 210 Freeway."Any time you head toward an embankment, the likely hood of tipping is pretty great," Gomez said.Stopped drivers exited their cars and crossed barriers to see what h儲存ppened, but were ordered back in their cars by police."We were crossing the concrete line (on the freeway) and walking to see what was going on, so the cop came by and told everyone to get back in their cars," said Adrian Canto, who was stuck on the 210 Freeway just west of the Irwindale exit. The Pasadena resident had been on the freeway for more than an hour by 11 a.m."There was like a total of 5 helicopters that showed up, now literally a police motorcycle just went by us," he said. "A couple of those have been going by but they haven't told us anything."The overturned charter bus operated by Da Zhen Travel Agency was en route to San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino, according to travel consultant Anna Zhang.Da Zhen Travel Agency, based out of Monterey Park, operates charter buses for tours, said Zhang when reached by phone Thursday. A bus schedule from the casino shows 14 Da Zhen Travel buses traveling daily from Hacienda Heights, Monterey Park, Rosemead and San Gabriel to the casino. The company had a "Satisfactory" safety rating from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in September of 2010, but exceeded the FMCSA intervention threshold based on roadside data, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation website. A safety report from the Department of Transportation shows that the company is authorized to carry passengers, traveling 598,399 miles in 2011. Da Zhen was the subject of 30 vehicle inspections and 36 driver inspections over the past 24 months and had not been in any reported crashes, the report shows. The company has a current $5,000,000 insurance policy through New York Marine and General Insurance Co. in New York.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Daily News (Los Angeles) Visit the Daily News (Los Angeles) at .dailynews.com Distributed by MCT Information Services新蒲崗迷你倉

Advocate volunteers needed for sex assault victims
Source: The Augusta Chronicle, Ga. Aug. 22--For a victim of sexual assault, the attack is traumatic enough, but the process of reporting it to the proper authorities and gathering evidence for prosecution can be just as scary, advocates say. That's where the volunteer advocates at Rape Crisis and Sexual Assault Services comes in."Everybody who goes to the emergency room -- the nurse, the investigator -- they all sort of have an agenda. They need to get the information in case they want to prosecute," said Crisis Specialist Charlotte Murton. "Our advocates are there to inform the patient what their rights are, what their options are and everything."If a victim chooses to have evidence collected, the advocate explains the process so the victim knows what to expect. The process can include having a pelvic exam, having hairs taken and having any orifice swabbed that was involved in the assault."Our goal is to make it the least traumatic experience in the emergency room that we can, because we know having to tell your story, having to come and have the forensic collection done, is traumatic," she said. The organization was founded in 1975 and joined University Hospital in 1985. In Richmond and Columbia counties, about 75 volunteers man the crisis hotline 24 hours a day and more are needed."This is something they can do when they're at home. They don't have to come (to the center) or to the hospital and sit and wait," Murton said.Calls to the hotline are routed to the volunteers who are on call. Volunteers are required to be on call for 24 hours a month in eight- or 12-hour shifts. Then, if an emergency room visit is needed, they have to be able to be at hospital within 30 minutes. (Volunteers respond to all of the area hospitals, including the Veterans Administration and Eisenhower Army Medical Center.)Anyone can call the hotline, whether an incident happened two minutes ago or two decades ago. If the victim decides an emergency room visit is necessary, the volunteer will meet them there. Sometimes, the volunteer is just there to listen."Our volunteers are responsible for making sure the person that makes the call gets to a better place so they can make it through the night until they can get to an emergency room, or go see a physician, or whatever they need to do," said Volunteer Coordinator Leah Klein.Aja White has been volunteering with the center for 10 months. She said she likes not getting calls, because it means there are people out there who are not getting raped."But I do like coming in and helping people the best way I can," she said. "Just trying to guide them through the process and being that advocate."Dannielle Pope has also been a volunteer for 10 months, but she has a different perspectivemini storage Every phone call that does come in is another assault that has been reported. She feels that increased awareness of sexual assault is causing more people to feel comfortable coming forward to report it."So with reporting it, which is exactly what we want, we need advocates to handle that caseload, to be able to give people what they deserve," she said. "We want every single person to be able to do that. There's only so much staff and so many volunteers."Danny Yuk is one of only five male volunteers in the two-county area. He has been a volunteer advocate for six months and said most of the cases he's dealt with have been assaults on children. But he said while the perception may be that a female victim would be more comfortable with a female advocate, he has not found that to be true."I'll ask them beforehand, 'Would you like to speak with a female advocate,'" he said.Often they'll say no, he said."They're always willing to get some help," he said.Murton said there have always been a few male volunteers, but the victims don't usually care who comes to advocate for them. They're just happy someone is there."I've had people tell me before, 'I don't care who came in. All I know is someone got out of bed and came in here to care for me,'" she said.Male volunteers are usually paired with a female volunteer when responding to an adult female victim, Murton said.It does take a special person to volunteer for Rape Crisis and Sexual Assault Services, because not everyone has the ability to separate the victim from what has happened to them."We can't change what happened. We can't go back in time and do anything about that, but we can do something about today's visit and what we do in the emergency room from here on out," Murton said.New volunteers are required to go through an intensive 25-hour training that includes presentations from the district attorney's office, the Richmond and Columbia county sheriff's offices, and counselors from Georgia Regents University."It has to be (intensive), because what our volunteer advocates do is so important, and they're working with people at a very vulnerable time," Klein said. "It's important that they have that intensive training so that they know how to treat people with respect, and so that they know the protocols and what to do when somebody's assaulted."The next training session will be held Sept. 19-23 at University Hospital. Attendance at all dates is required. For more information about becoming a volunteer advocate, call Klein at (706) 774-2746 or e-mail her at volunteerrcsas@uh.org.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Augusta Chronicle (Augusta, Ga.)
