But the Navy announced Friday that the christening has been postponed until a later date because much of the federal government remains shuttered during the political stalemate in Washington. The vessel is expected to be launched on schedule without a public ceremony."It is incredibly unfortunate that we are being forced to cancel the christening ceremony for this great warship," Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus said in a statement on Friday. "But the ongoing government shutdown prevents us from being able to honor Admiral Zumwalt's memory with a ceremony befitting his and his family's legacy of service to our Nation and our Navy."Following the christening, the USS Zumwalt will be floated in the Kennebec River and stay at BIW for additional work.U.S. Rep. Chellie self storageingree, D-District 1, said the postponement is a disappointment, especially for the workers who have been building the ship for several years. A subsidiary of General Dynamics, BIW is one of Maine's largest private employers with more than 5,000 workers."The christeing of the Zumwalt is a big deal, but the government shutdown just made it impossible for the Navy to pull off the ceremony next weekend," Pingree said."This is an inconvenience and a disappointment but is also another example of how the government shutdown is impacting Maine," Pingree said. "The shutdown is having a real effect on our economy through layoffs, a decline in tourism, a cutback in small business lending and in countless other ways."The USS Zumwalt is named for the late Navy Adm. Elmo R. "Bud" Zumwalt Jr., a former chief of naval operations. The Navy said it is coordinating with BIW and the Zumwalt family to reschedule the ceremony.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Portland Press Herald (Portland, Maine) Visit the Portland Press Herald (Portland, Maine) at .pressherald.com Distributed by MCT Information Servicesmini storage
