By Deng Zhangyu ( China Daily) A Chinese girl poses with "Rubber Duck" badges after a news conference on Wednesday to announce its arrival in Beijing. The rubber duck designed by artist Florentijn Hofman has gained rave reviews after a recent appearance in Hong Kong. An 18-meter-high version will be unveiled in Beijing on Sept 6, with organizers expecting more than 8 million people to view the art installation. Mark Ralston / Agence France-Presse After touring 13 cities in 10 countries, a giant rubber duck designed by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman will be in Beijing from September to October, floating first at Beijing Garden Expo Park and then at the Summer Palace, the Beijing Design Week organizing committee said on Wednesday. This is the first time Hofman's duck will come to the Chinese mainland. The bright yellow conceptual art piece has already won lots of Chinese fans after it was displayed in Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour in May.Beijing's rubber duck will be 18-meters-high, taller than the 16.5-meter version displayed in Hong Kong, said Zeng Hui, vice-director of the Beijing Design Week organizing committee office."In case the giant duck deflates, we have made two rubber ducks," Zeng said. That happened in Hong Kong, where the huge inflatable duck was reduced to a puddle of yellow plastic after being displayed for two weeks. The artwork is a gift to Beijing from Amsterdam - this year's Beijing Design Week Guest of Honor. The designer will visit Beijing for its launch day on Sept 6 at the Garden Expo, said Anouchka Driel, senior cultural affairs officer at the embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The yellow duck will be on display at Beijing Garden Expo Park from Sept 6 to 23. People can also see the giant yellow duck against a Chinese ancient bridge at the Summer Palace from Sept 26 to Oct 26.According to Chen Dongliang, another deputy-director of the Beijing Design Week organizing committee office, the final decision to choose Beijing'文件倉 Garden Expo and the Summer Palace as the duck's Beijing homes primarily lay in the size of the locations and whether they were typical of Beijing."The places we plan to install the rubber duck were mainly decided by the Dutch designer, Hofman, and we just gave him some advice," he said.Complaints over fees However, people have to buy tickets to the sites if they wish to see the duck that is already making waves on the Chinese mainland. The duck was installed in public areas and displayed free of charge in the previous cities it visited, including Hong Kong, Sydney and London.Having to pay to view the artwork has evoked complaints online.Tens of thousands of people commented following the news of the rubber duck's imminent arrival in Beijing. About half of those complained about having to buy tickets to see the piece."If I have to pay for the visit, I won't go to see the duck," said Shi Yao, 25, an office worker for the China National Offshore Oil Corporation Institute in Beijing.A ticket to the Beijing Garden Expo Park costs 100 yuan ($16.34) and the cost of entering the Summer Palace is 30 yuan.Ticket prices are the same as usual, said Gao Feng, leader of the park, and Li Linjie, deputy director of the Summer Palace."Cities like London and Hong Kong have large enough water features, which is what Beijing lacks. The water in the two places chosen to put the duck is suitable. I think it's reasonable for visitors to buy tickets as usual," said Ge Jianxiong, a professor of history of Fudan University. The duck will be in Beijing during Mid-Autumn Festival and the National Day holidays, when crowds of tourists from around the nation are expected to visit the capital.Last year during the national holidays, nearly 1 million people visited the Summer Palace, Li said.A Chinese rubber duck fan club was set up on Wednesday, led by singer Lin Yilun. It aims to protect the copyright of rubber-duck-related products sold in China.dengzhangyu@chinadaily.com.cn存倉

Tuen Mun shop owners - particularly those near the West Rail MTR station - stand to reap a windfall as the new HK$2.mini storage5 billion V City shopping center is revitalizing the area's retail property market. Developer Sun Hung Kai Properties (0016), which recently opened the 300,000-square-foot mall, expects the 130-plus shops and restaurants to attract more than 100,000 visitors a day - including locals, tourists and mainlanders, as Tuen Mun is less than 30 minutes away from Shenzhen Bay Port. V City's location at 83 Heung Sze Wui Road serves as a transport hub with more than 50 shuttle routes to housing estates and cross-border buses. "Most owners started holding on to their shops in 2011, in the hope that prices would rise further," said Dennis Cheng Tak-ming, a senior sales director at Centaline Property Agency. Currently, there are only about four shops available for sale in the entire neighborhood around V City, and owners are generally asking for HK$10 million above the market average. Meanwhile, shop owners leasing out their premises are doubling or even tripling their rents. For example, the owner of a 856-sq-ft shop at 28-38 Heung Sze Wui Road is now asking HK$85 million for the property he bought for only HK$34 million in January last year. Agents said he recently rejected an offer of HK$65 million. The space is occupied by PrimeCredit, a local financial institution, whose monthly rent of HK$125,000 is 60 percent higher than the HK$78,000 it paid up to a year ago. Another owner subdivided 1,000 sq ft of retail space on nearby Yan Ching Street into five small shops and is asking total rent of HK$600,000 a month - comparable with that in Causeway Bay. "Some rents have even tripled," Cheng said. UA Finance, which leases 800 sq ft of space at 12 Heung Sze Wui Road, saw its monthly rent jump to HK$150,000 this month - up from HK$50,000 under the previous contract signed in 2010. Another shop on the same street was rented out last month for HK$100,000 per month, compared with HK$52,000 paid by the previous salon tenant. Midland IC&I (0459) sales director James Siu said retail rents in the vicinity have risen about 40 percent on average, although there are cases of them more than doubling. "Most shop owners are optimistic about the future development of Tuen Mun, expecting the district to be turned into a new shopping destination for tourists and locals," Siu said. V City has attracted a number of internaself storageional high-end brands, including agnes b and Gap. Jewelry retailers such as Chow Sang Sang and Chow Tai Fook have also established presences there. Prior to moving into the new mall, Chow Tai Fook paid HK$140,000 per month for nearby premises at 6-24 Yan Ching Street. A Vietnamese restaurant recently took the space, for HK$200,000 a month. Cheng said traffic flows in the area have doubled since V City opened this month, with buses and minibuses linking the mall with Shenzhen Bay Port and Lok Ma Chau. CityBus has increased the frequency for its B3 and B3X routes between Shenzhen and Tuen Mun to three times per 15 minutes. "It only takes me 20 minutes to get to Tuen Mun, where I can get everything I want, including baby milk formula and snacks," said a mainlander, surnamed Liu, who comes cross-border shopping with her two-year-old daughter every week. Routinely spending about HK$1,200 per trip at the landmark Tuen Mun Town Plaza, developed by Sino Land (0083), she takes advantage of the free shuttle bus from Shenzhen Bay Port and back. Siu said over the past few months, some shop owners have even started inviting expressions of interest from potential new tenants while an existing lease is still in place. For instance, the owner of a 1,340-sq-ft space at 28-38 Heung Sze Wui Road has made it clear he intends to jack up his asking rent to HK$150,000 per month after the expiry of the current tenant's lease at HK$55,000 a month. Tuen Mun residential property prices have also been boosted by new developments in the district, as well as the rising frequency of mainlander visits. The asking rents of 20 flats available at Century Gateway, atop V City, are at least 50 percent higher than the market average, about HK$15,000 per month. "Around one-third of the homeowners in the first phase of Century Gateway are mainlanders, among which 10 percent are investors,'' said Midland Realty district manager Andy Ng Wai-kwong. He pointed out that a 300-sq-ft secondhand home in Tuen Mun now costs more than HK$2 million - double the price of two years ago. Separately, veteran investor Tang Shing-bor just bought a 14-story industrial building at 4 Kin Fung Circuit - near V City - for HK$498 million. He is speculating on the property, as the Town Planning Board has given approval for its conversion into an office and retail complex. The building currently generates monthly rent of HK$1.3 million. karen.chiu@singtaonewscorp.com 迷你倉

Source: Pittsburgh Post-GazetteAug. 28--Fifty years ago today, they were there.Bill Strickland was at the front of the reflecting pool near the Lincoln Memorial. Deborah Friedman was way in the back of the National Mall, struggling to listen through a tinny sound system. James English had wandered out on his lunch hour during a summer job at the Department of Labor. Laurence Glasco remembers taking shelter from the sun near a stand of trees, while Sala Udin had secured a place on the grass so close to the memorial's steps that he got quite a shock when Martin Luther King Jr. appeared on the stage."I expected a huge man to walk out, and instead there was this short person who just bounded onto the stage. I remember thinking, 'Wow! He's not a giant, he's a little guy,' " said Mr. Udin, who was 19 at the time and studying mortuary science in New York City. "We'd waited all day, and it was really hot, the sun was beating down, there was no shade. But we forgot all about that when he started to speak."Today, President Barack Obama will speak on the very spot where King delivered his great "I Have a Dream" speech on Aug. 28, 1963, in Washington, D.C. The president's speech caps a week's worth of events commemorating the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. It was highlighted by a rally on the mall Saturday that drew thousands of people, including many Pittsburghers.Half a century ago, a large delegation of Pittsburghers came on a special train -- the first one to arrive, relieving the fears of organizers who were being needled by reporters about the possibility of smaller-than-predicted crowds. At 8:02 a.m. the first "Freedom Train" pulled into Union Station in Washington from Pittsburgh, immediately followed by more trains, and buses, and cars, depositing thousands and thousands of marchers. There's a photograph on display at the Newseum in Washington that shows a line of people, neatly attired in sundresses and coats and ties, walking toward a still uncrowded mall, the U.S. Capitol behind them in the haze. The leading marchers hold a banner aloft that says "W. Penna." "Pittsburgh Presbytery" reads another sign. The official Western Pennsylvania delegation count was 1,100, a sizable number but still only a fraction of a crowd ultimately estimated at 250,000 -- "the greatest undercount in American history," U.S. Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., a key civil rights activist, has said. The Mall, which can fit about 1 million people comfortably, was almost completely full that day."I don't think I had ever been in a crowd that large," said Debbie Friedman, who, at age 15, was taken to the march by her parents, both politically active in liberal causes and residents of Stanton Heights. "It was the first time in my life I'd ever had a concrete sense of being part of something huge like that, and the first time where I was in a crowd where the majority of people were black, not white."There were predictions of violence -- Washington, Life magazine declared, was undergoing "the worst case of invasion jitters since the First Battle of Bull Run." Most businesses closed, federal employees stayed home and there was a heavy, if discreet, security presence -- 4,000 riot troops near downtown, 15,000 paratroopers on alert. They weren't needed. The group from Pittsburgh -- about 60 percent black, 40 percent white -- rode on the overnight Freedom Train with 23 marshals on it, "but there were no deportment problems to handle," reported Ingrid Jewell of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "The young folks learned the words to marching songs during the night, and taught them to their elders in the morning."Once on the Mall, the atmosphere was "part Sunday School picnic, part political convention, part fish fry," the New York Times' James Reston said. There were church groups munching on hot dogs, there were movie stars and folk singers -- Harry Belafonte, Burt Lancaster, Sidney Poitier, Bob Dylan and Marlon Brando. Opera star Marian Anderson, who had so movingly sung at the Lincoln Memorial in 1939 after segregation closed other venues to her, was stuck in traffic and arrived minutes too late to sing the National Anthem, which left her in tears (she sang a gospel song later). The march wasn't King's idea, but that of A. Philip Randolph, head of the first black union, the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, who had advocated marching as early as 1941. But his dream was deferred over the years as presidents took tiny, incremental steps to forestall rebellion, forbidding discrimination in federal jobs and housing -- executive orders with little power over the private sector.By 1963, after several years of lunch counter sit-ins, freedom rides on buses, marches and brutal pushback by police in the South, King, Randolph and other civil rights leaders knew what they wanted: a civil rights bill, desegregation of schools, a $2 minimum wage, a federal job-works program and prohibition of unfair employment practices. It was a long list, but on this hot, hazy day, there would be no unrest. As speaker after speaker took the stage to talk, or sing, or entertain, a pleasant buzz settled over the crowd. The high spirits and enthusiasm, and the lack of nonviolent resistance, "wasn't just a welcome relief," said Mr. English, a lawyer who served as secretary-treasurer of the United Steelworkers until his retirement in 2009. "It told the people of Washington and in the country that those supporting the civil rights were very much in control of what they were doing. It told the country they were not to be feared but to be respected."In spring 1963, in Birmingham, Ala., demonstrators against segregation in public facilities, restaurants and stores were met with police dogs, cattle prods and high-pressure water jets. On June 11, George Wallace stood in the doorway of the University of Alabama to block the admission of two black students, before being forcibly carried away -- by pre-arrangement in a deal with Kennedy officials-- by the National Guard. That night, President John F. Kennedy went on television to make a pa迷你倉sionate argument for passage of civil rights legislation.Kennedy had come a long way from 1961, said Harris Wofford, the former Pennsylvania senator, who served early in Kennedy's term as special assistant for civil rights and later was instrumental in forming the Peace Corps. He recalled one meeting in 1961 he had arranged with King and the president, in the personal quarters of the White House."It was one of the best conversations between two thoughtful concerned people I've ever seen," said Mr. Wofford, in an interview from his home in Washington, who watched while the president explained to King why he didn't have political support in Congress -- yet -- to introduce civil rights legislation. King, he said, understood. After they walked out of the White House, Mr. Wofford said, King mused about three qualities that make a great leader -- intelligence, political skills and passion. "He told me, 'Kennedy's definitely got the first two. We'll have to see how he does on the passion.' "Two years later, Kennedy made good on the third requirement, with the televised speech the night of the University of Alabama incident.By August, Congress still hadn't acted, and the president was, "along with all of us, worried that a march would could get out of hand and set back the efforts underway to get the legislation passed," Mr. Wofford said.Laurence Glasco, an associate professor of history at the University of Pittsburgh, was a graduate student in Buffalo at the time and went with a group from Dayton, Ohio. He remembers a high school friend called him up, "terrified. 'Are you people going to take over Washington and overthrow the government?' " he asked. "There was a lot of worry about violence."When the 16-year old Bill Strickland, a North Side resident, arrived in Washington, he was shocked and thrilled by what he saw; "It was like a city, tents everywhere, every race, every complexion in the country was there, every twist of the ideological spectrum was there."In Pittsburgh, the civil rights movement was stirring. Mr. Strickland remembers being involved in efforts to desegregate the Sully Pool in South Park in 1963 and going to the march "was the best way I could show I was committed to Dr. King's mission."Some civil rights leaders weren't buying it. Malcolm X, who boycotted the event, called it the "Farce on Washington," a falsely optimistic display of racial harmony. Ralph Proctor, then a Pitt student who founded the University of Pittsburgh's NAACP chapter, refused to go, "out of protest," he said."Many of us on the militant edge of the civil rights movement opted not to go," he said. "It sounded like they were saying to us, 'You can have this parade, but get out of town by nightfall.' "Mr. Proctor, now 74 and professor of ethnic and diversity studies at Community College of Allegheny County, had headed south in the late 1950s to join the movement. He was repeatedly beaten and arrested, thrown in jail, shocked with cattle prods."I was full of seething anger," said Mr. Proctor, who had grown up in gangs in the Hill District. "The final straw was seeing a black woman knocked down by a cop and held down with a knee to her neck, someplace in Mississippi. I snapped and went after the sheriff, and the organizers said to me afterwards that I had become a liability because I was so angry. 'We think you have lost the feel for nonviolence,' they said, and told me to go back home to Pittsburgh. And they were right."Still, I saw a great deal and it changed my soul."King came on at 3 p.m., the last of 10 speakers, to deliver what would be considered the greatest American speech of the 20th century, although not everyone knew it then."The sound system wasn't that great," said Ms. Friedman of Squirrel Hill. "I really couldn't hear what he was saying. My 15-year-old self was not totally focused on the content of the speech anyway -- it took me a couple of weeks or months to appreciate the mastery of it."King, consumed with logistical planning for the march, had written last-minute, finishing at 3:30 that morning. His trembling, soaring "I Have a Dream" refrain wasn't in the final, prepared text. But as he began to finish, he paused -- and instead of urging the crowd to "go back to our communities as members of the international association for the advancement of creative dissatisfaction," King put the text aside and, extemporaneously, began to speak of a "dream."The president, who was watching it live on television, "was elated," Mr. Wofford said, and met with the march's organizers in the White House immediately afterward.Mr. Strickland said he suddenly felt "that this was a man I wanted to be like. He didn't exude any fear."Not even out of high school, Mr. Strickland knew he'd found his life's work. Five years later, he founded the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild and today is president and CEO of Manchester Bidwell Corp., an internationally acclaimed adult education training, arts and social enterprise center on the North Side.Mr. Udin sat there, stunned. "It was the speech that answered my question as a 19-year-old about what I was going to do for the rest of my life. Then and there I decided I wanted to join the movement." He would leave mortuary school, return to his home in the Hill District and, in 1965, would go to Mississippi to work with the Freedom Democratic Party, enduring dozens of arrests and beatings.Mr. Udin almost got killed but went on to become active in Pittsburgh theater, a member of Pittsburgh City Council and later the head of the Coro Center for Civic Leadership's Pittsburgh chapter.Mr. Glasco remembered the pin-drop silence in the huge crowd, and that he cried. And, after he returned home to Ohio, he remembered his once-skeptical father's words."He was impressed by the march and thought it might have some impact. He said, 'If we can desegregate Mississippi by the year 2000, that will be really something.' Lower latency helps to improve services like mobile gaming, two-way video calling and telemedicine. -- More efficient use of spectrum. Wireless spectrum is a finite resource, and LTE uses spectrum more efficiently than other technologies, creating more space to carry data traffic and services and to deliver a better network experience."We continue to see demand for mobile Internet skyrocket, and our 4G LTE network in Steuben County responds to what customers want from their mobile experience -- more, faster, reliably, on the best devices," said Marissa Shorenstein, New York President, AT&T.In the first half of 2013, AT&T invested nearly $225 million in its wireless and wired networks in New York.

Source: The Monitor, McAllen, TexasAug. 28--EDINBURG -- Jurors averted their eyes as they were shown gruesome crime scene photos Tuesday morning during the capital murder trial of Leroy Arista. The pictures provided a grim window into the final moments of the life of 86-year-old Willis Kimmons, a World War II veteran and retired U.S. Border Patrol agent who was beaten to death July 12, 2011, during a burglary in his Mission home. On Sept. 25, 2012, a 20-year-old David Tarbutton pleaded guilty to murder in Kimmons' death; he is serving a life sentence. One of the pictures was shown by Assistant District Attorney Victoria Muniz on Tuesday during her questioning of Mission police Officer Paul Williams, who was the first officer on scene.Williams told jurors that he was called by neighbors who found the garage door open and couldn't get a hold of Kimmons.Williams went into the house and found Kimmons lying on his bed, which had been splattered with blood. The man's face had various lacerations and the blood had reached the nearby walls and floor, the police officer said.Another photograph showed the credit cards and hearing aides that Kimmons had taken off that afternoon as he prepared to go to bed for the night.According to Muniz, Arista and Tarbutton went to Kimmons' hou自存倉e to steal firearms from the veteran -- firearms that Tarbutton knew of because the older man, a mentor of sorts to him, had taken Tarbutton hunting.Defense attorney Carlos A. Garcia said during his opening statements that Arista -- who is a few years older than Tarbutton -- was a recent acquaintance of the younger man and was duped into taking him to Kimmons' house."Evidence will show that my client had no knowledge of Tarbutton's intentions and was fooled into giving him a ride," the lawyer said. "That same evidence will show that Tarbutton was the only individual in that house and he was the one who murdered Mr. Kimmons."Garcia said his client's involvement was limited to driving Tarbutton to Kimmons' house as a favor so that he could pick up some items and Arista had no knowledge of Tarbutton's true intentions.Once Tarbutton was in police custody, he told investigators that he was the one who had killed Kimmons, the attorney said."But like all common criminals who get caught, he tried to pass the buck and minimize his role," Garcia said.Testimony was expected to continue Wednesday morning.iortiz@themonitor.comCopyright: ___ (c)2013 The Monitor (McAllen, Texas) Visit The Monitor (McAllen, Texas) at .themonitor.com Distributed by MCT Information Services迷你倉新蒲崗

Source: The Salina Journal, Kan. Aug. 25--MANHATTAN -- Nobody appreciates consistency more than Bill Snyder. And five years into his second Kansas State football reclamation project, one constant stands out: the Wildcats remain remarkably unburdened by outside expectations. Not even back-to-back seasons of double-digit victories, including last year's 11-2 record, Big 12 championship and flirtation with a national title, have convinced skeptics that K-State is back on top to stay.Media members who cover the Big 12 recently picked the Wildcats sixth in the conference, while coaches voting in the USA Today preseason poll ranked them just outside the top 25 -- behind four other league schools."That's nothing new," senior running back John Hubert said. "That's just something that we look at as motivation."Our expectation is always high, no matter how people look at us or rate us, and we're always going to come out ready to work and ready to prove people wrong like we have the past few years."Don't expect Snyder to lose any sleep over it."It's precarious trying to make those kinds of (predictions) as the season gets started," said Snyder, whose Wildcats open their season at 7:30 p.m. Friday against North Dakota State at newly-renovated Snyder Family Stadium. "Our program is no different than any other in that the dynamics of the program change year in and year out, regardless of how many you do or do not have returning."There is plenty to like about the 2013 Wildcats, especially on offense, where they return their leading rusher, a talented stable of receivers and the entire line. But they also must break in a new starting quarterback to replace Heisman Trophy finalist and Big 12 offensive player of the year Collin Klein.Defensively, all-conference free safety Ty Zimmerman and nickel back Randall Evans are the only starters back from a unit that lost its entire front seven, including All-America middle linebacker Arthur Brown. Senior linebacker Tre Walker made four starts before missing the last five games with a knee injury. But Snyder's biggest concerns center less on personnel than on the values and work ethic that have allowed the Wildcats to overachieve year after year in the eyes of critics who continue to sell them short."I would always have the concern about young people and older people like myself and some of our coaches as well, not taking anything for granted," he said. "Not taking our performance level for granted, based on whatever the program has done up to this point in time."Center B.J. Finney, a team captain and all-Big 12 pick last year as a sophomore, agreed with his coach that even overachievers have to guard against letdowns. After all, last year's lone regular-season loss at Baylor probably cost the Wildcats a shot at a national title."This is a very tough conference," he said. "You can't fall asleep on any of these teams, obviously."Look at us last year at the Baylor game. We took it for granted and we got beat bad."OffenseLess than a week into preseason camp, the last time Snyder addressed the media, he had not yet identified a starting quarterback. Sophomore Daniel Sams, Klein's backup a year ago, was neck and neck with junior Jake Waters, who led Iowa Western to a national junior college championship in 2012.Sams is an explosive runner but unproven passer who played in eight games as Klein's backup, averaging 7.3 yards per carry with three touchdowns. But he only attempted eight passes, completing six for 55 yards.Waters set a national juco record for completion percentage at 73.3 and threw for 3,501 yards with 39 touchdowns and only three interceptions. Though he went through spring practice with the Wildcats and proved to be a quick study, he has yet to take a Division I snap. Not that anybody is complaining. Regardless who wins 自存倉he job, the Wildcats have a solid backup ready to go."I really think whatever guy wins the position, our offense is going to be pretty effective," Sams said."It doesn't hurt to have running back John Hubert returning for his senior year after back-to-back 900-yard rushing seasons. And while the Wildcats lost leading receiver Chris Harper, there is plenty of experience and talent back, led by junior Tyler Lockett (44 catches, 687 yards, four TDs), senior Tramaine Thompson (37-526, four TDs) and backups Curry Sexton and Torell Miller. At tight end, three-year starter Travis Tannahill is gone, but senior Andre McDonald and junior Zach Trujillo both have considerable experience as backups. Redshirt freshman Glenn Gronkowski and junior Zach Nemechek will try to fill the shoes of Braden Wilson at fullback. The strength of the offense should be up front. The cornerstones are Finney and senior all-conference left tackle Cornelius Lucas.Senior Tavon Rooks is back at right tackle and sophomore Cody Whitehair, perhaps the most versatile of the six, at left guard. That leaves senior Keenan Taylor and sophomore Boston Stiverson, who missed much of the season with an injury, to battle at right guard."That's the best feeling ever to have five of your offensive linemen coming back that have been in the program, that know all the calls and checks," Hubert said.DefenseClearly the Wildcats' most pressing concern is putting together a cohesive defensive unit with players that are veterans in the K-State program but dreadfully short on game experience.Only seniors Zimmerman and Walker started last year's opener, and both missed time with injuries. But senior middle linebacker Blake Slaughter is coming off a redshirt year with four career starts, junior Randall Evans started seven games as a nickel back and sophomore Dante Barnett started the last two regular-season games in Zimmerman's place."It's a bit of a misnomer, two guys coming back, because Dante Barnett started last year when Zim got hurt, so he's got playing experience, and Evans started the entire year at nickel," defensive coordinator Tom Hayes said. "Tre, in 2011, was very experienced for us in that year."The most important thing is, those guys that have that playing experience have to be the strength, have to be the core, and bring these enthusiastic, eager young guys who are trying to get these spots along the right path."Up front, all four starters are gone, leaving only sophomore tackle Travis Britz and junior end Ryan Mueller with significant experience. But Snyder said the competition has been spirited both on the interior and the outside.Top candidates to join pass rush specialist Mueller at end are sophomore Marquel Bryant, junior Laton Dowling and senior Alauna Finau. Senior Chaquil Reed, redshirt freshman Demonte Hood and junior college transfer Chris Brown are battling for the other tackle spot.Slaughter, Walker and junior Jonathan Truman, a backup and special teams standout last year, are the top three linebackers. In the secondary, Evans will remain at nickel back and could see time at corner along with seniors Kip Daily, Carl Miles and Dorrian Roberts.Zimmerman and Barnett are set at safety.Special teamsThe Wildcats must replace both of their kicking specialists from a year ago, but should be solid everywhere else. And while place-kicker Anthony Cantele is gone, his younger brother Jack, a sophomore, is ready to step in. Junior Mark Krause is the leading candidate to handle the punting duties.K-State has two of the league's -- and the nation's -- top return men in Lockett and Thompson, and a veteran long snapper in senior Marcus Heit.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Salina Journal (Salina, Kan.)
