Six local business leaders share their objectives for 2014
Source: The Columbian, Vancouver, Wash. Jan. 05--The turning of the calendar page from Dec. 31 to Jan. 1 is no different from any other moment. Yet many of us use that moment, and the days that border it, as a time of serious personal reflection that sometimes leads to positive change.Because the start of the new year arrives just after the shortest day of the year, the period of reflection seems hard-wired biologically as a way to cope with the long nights and short days of winter. The gradual expansion of daylight that brings the earth's awakening signals a time for renewal of mind, body, and spirit. Many people launch diets or sign up for gym memberships to improve their health, and they give more generously. Businesses and nonprofit groups tap into those instincts by selling diet plans and gym memberships, and offering an opportunity to make tax-deductible charitable donations. In the spirit of the season, The Columbian decided to ask some local business leaders about their resolutions for the new year. We asked Kelly Parker, president and CEO of the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, to suggest names, and we followed her recommendations to recruit participants in this admittedly random exercise. The six people who responded offered resolutions for their personal lives and for their businesses. And in recognition of the many divisive community conflicts in 2013 over transportation, oil transport and political priorities, we asked these leaders what their wish would be for our community in 2014. Their answers, edited for clarity and brevity, are offered inside this section.A happy new year to all!Ben HoskinsBob Hoskins is a Vancouver franchise partner of 1-800-GOT-JUNK and You Move Me.--Personal ResolutionSummer is our busy season for moving and junk removal, but this summer we are going to take a two-week road trip to visit friends and family. Our daughter starts kindergarten in September so our previous system of traveling in the fall isn't going to work anymore.--Business ResolutionIn 2014, You Move Me is resolving to bring all our clients a cup of coffee or tea the morning of their move. We try to make the process of moving as pleasant as possible -- almost as if your friends were helping out. When people move they've often packed their coffeemaker and a friend would offer to bring them coffee, so in 2014 we will as well!--Community WishI hope that in 2014 community leaders focus on opportunities for improvement in areas of agreement or shared goals. Small improvements compound. I hope we continue to experiment and tweak with the goal of continually becoming more efficient and effective in how we allow the economy to grow, how we educate our children, and how we help our most vulnerable. Also, if I never have to hear the word "bridge" -- from either supporters or opponents -- that will be OK.Erika DonaldsonErika Donaldson is a digital marketing consultant at Fringe Media Web Design in Vancouver.--Personal ResolutionOur New Year's resolution is to further our collaborative, positive work environment for all employees. This will begin with furnishing our brand new office in downtown Vancouver. We are excited to now be fully immersed in all that Vancouver has to offer, and we look forward to adding our Fringe charm to the downtown area. We will also accomplish this by hosting networking events where we can all get together and strengthen the unity that is already flourishing within this area.--Business ResolutionWe are ready and excited to be an active part of our Vancouver community. We plan on strengthening our alliances with our business partners which include WSU Vancouver, the Greater Vancouver Chamber, the Portland Business Alliance and many others. We are going to make it a point to educate local small businesses about the importance of digital marketing and how to engage in successful marketing campaigns. We will give to charity and do everything we can to help growth and awareness of the importance of technology in our current society. We will grow our business and establish our brand in Vancouver and Portland. We will also help nonprofits, such as the Sunshine Division in Portland, strengthen their digital presence through targeted volunteer work.--Community WishOur wish is for everyone to pay it forward. We encourage everyone to go out of their way to do something nice for a stranger each and every opportunity they get. By doing this, we can make Vancouver into the perfect place we all would like it to be.Jim WestJim West is a real estate broker at Coldwell Banker Commercial, Jenkins & Associates in Vancouver.--Personal ResolutionSeveral factors influence my thinking for a 2014 resolution.1. I'll turn 60.2. Last year I became a grandparent for the first time.3. Last July I was in an accident with a car while riding a bicycle. (My good fortune -- I had minimal injuries.)It seems I'm entering a new stage of life, and I realize none of us know how long we have. So I have outlined a series of activities to make sure I am spending more time and reaffirming and strengthening my relationships and time with my wife, Betsy, our kids and granddaughter.--Business ResolutionI am starting my sixth year in commercial real estate. I've had some successes and feel I am on the right track to continue to grow. Entering this industry in late 2008-2009 was a bit frightening and there were times I wondered if I'd made a good choice.Of course for 2014 I have some marketing and networking plans for creating new opportunities and relationships with prospective clients. However, one area I want to significantly improve in my business is communications with, and appreciation for, the client base I've developed and served these first five years. I've created a simple action plan to raise m迷你倉 game in that arena.--Community WishI attempt to stay plugged into the activities of our community in a number of ways. In non-profits or service clubs I find people of all political persuasions working together with no bickering, sniping, or nitpicking. Yet somehow that often seems to dissolve when we get to the political arena. I had some experience running for office in 2012, and speak with many folks in both parties regularly, and I find there are many subjects you can't even have a discussion about. The real problem with all that is that we aren't actually dealing with the long-term issues that are the most important. So my wish would be that Clark County becomes a community that changes that trend. Listen more -- understand what drives peoples' actions and look for common ground.Kim CapelotoKim Capeloto is executive vice president of Vancouver-based Riverview Community Bank.--Personal ResolutionI am hoping to be able to focus on keeping a balance between my "personal life" and my "professional/community life." That line can get blurred easily and I am lucky enough to have an amazingly supportive (and patient) wife and family that have always backed me. Spending even more time with my wife and children as we all continue to "grow up" is my main focus. This does not mean a reduction in community outreach. It simply means continued effort to keep the balance.--Business ResolutionRiverview celebrated its 90th anniversary this past year. We asked many of our employees, clients and our board what they felt was missing from banking these days. Frankly we expected to hear that we needed more technology solutions or more locations, or ...What we heard loud and clear was that people want banking to be more fun! So that is our resolution for 2014 ... to put more fun in banking. We are not 100 percent sure how we'll do that, but we are fairly sure that it has something to do with money!--Community WishMy wish for our community is that we sincerely all work toward making this a better place to live, work and raise a family. That will mean that not all of us can get exactly what we want all the time, but that when decisions are made and leaders are picked and causes are identified and needs are uncovered, that we set aside our personal agendas and REALLY do what is in the best interest of our communities and their citizens.Donald RussoDonald Russo is an real estate attorney in the Vancouver office of regional law firm Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt.--Personal ResolutionThat all of my family and friends stay healthy during the coming year, for when you have your health, you have virtually everything.--Business ResolutionI hope that our law firm, Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt, and in particular the Vancouver office, continues to grow its business and that every attorney in the office continues to stay involved in helping to make our community a better place to live.--Community WishThat our local (and state) leaders choose to guide our community forward with a positive vision, to place the needs of our citizens, including the unemployed and the homeless, ahead of personal agendas, and to take positive nonpartisan action to help grow our local economy. My New Year's wish for our global community: as Eleanor Roosevelt wrote: "When will our consciences grow so tender that we will act to prevent human misery rather than avenge it?"Veronika "Ronnie" NoizeVeronika "Ronnie" Noize is the founder of the DIY Marketing Center in Vancouver.--Personal ResolutionWhile appreciating the idea of resolutions, I find that for me, making a commitment is far more powerful. A resolution is often nothing more than a good idea that I want to do, but a commitment is what I am honor-bound to do.My personal commitment for 2014 is to enjoy 365 days of gratitude. I have done this before, and it had a profoundly positive effect on my life, so it has become my top commitment for the new year. The way it works is quite simple: Every morning when I wake up, I write down 10 things for which I am grateful in a small notebook, which is kept in my bedside table. The only rule is that nothing on the list may be repeated within seven days. The process is simple, fast, and starts my day with a smile on my face, and gratitude in my heart. It reminds me how very lucky I am, and, even in the face of fear or tragedy, how much good there is in my life to appreciate.--Business ResolutionFor 2014, I am committed to perfecting the systems in my business. About a year or so ago I received a book in the mail from Sam Carpenter, the author of "Work the System." The book dazzled me because of the absolute clarity with which it presented one of the key issues for small-business owners -- the swirling confusion and overwhelming nature of a business when one is a solo entrepreneur. The solution to this confusion is creating systems that provide the structure to achieve strategic objectives (and my entrepreneurial dreams!).One of my goals is to expand this business to become its own entity, and not just something that I do from 9 to 5; to make it a "real" business that can be duplicated in other markets and help millions of people requires a systematic approach that others can follow to achieve the same results. 2014 is that year for me.--Community WishMy wish for our community in 2014 is full prosperity, based on this definition from Wikipedia: "Prosperity is the state of flourishing, thriving, good fortune and/or successful social status. Prosperity often encompasses wealth but also includes other factors which can be independent of wealth to varying degrees, such as happiness and health."Copyright: ___ (c)2014 The Columbian (Vancouver, Wash.) Tulsan cracks open his busted harmonica, finds second career
Source: Tulsa World, Okla. Jan. 05--When Mike Peace would blow out a reed on his harmonica, he would usually just toss the whole thing. The rest of the 19 reeds would usually work fine, but hitting a bad reed when Peace was on stage could ruin a song."I figured out that was stupid because those things had gotten expensive," Peace said.So he opened it up. With help from some colleagues and the Internet, Peace pieced the instrument back together and fixed his instrument, good as new. And cheaper than buying a new one. With that, Peace, 68, started repairing his friends' harmonicas and then harmonicas from professional musicians across the country. Peace, of Tulsa, became one of the few people in the country who repairs and builds custom harmonicas. What some see as a kids' toy, Peace sees as a delicate instrument that is essential in folk and blues music. It's what got Peace interested in the first place."Anybody can play the harmonica. That's the reason it's always been considered a kid's toy," Peace said. "A kid can play it and make noise with it. But it's a difficult instrument to play well, like a lot of instruments."He played in several bands in the '70s and '80, running in the same circles as Tulsa musicians such as J.J. Cale, David Teegarden and Jimmy "Junior" Markham. Now as a harmonica repair guy, many see his services as invaluable."He's very good at what he's doing," Markham said. "It's great to see somebody take that on. It's a lot of patience and a lot of work."But when Peace first picked up the instrument, it was more of a prop than a future.Peace was 22 in the Army in Alabama in 1968 when he started to pick up on guitar techniques. It was the folk music of the era that really connected with him."I thought I wanted to be Bob Dylan -- I got a harmonica with a rack around my neck," Peace said. "The first time I ever heard Bob Dylan I was a freshman in college, and that was the beginning of the civil rights movement. Some of his lyrics just blew me away. I thought that was really cool."The harmonica ended up getting in the way more than enhancing the sound. He focused on his guitar work but still didn't see it as a way of life. So after the Army, he found and kept a day job.Peace settled in Tulsa and was one of the first people in the area to sell the large satellite dishes that were so popular in the 1980s."I've always been an experimenter," Peace said. "I've always liked something different."One of Peace's bands was The Dinosaurs, which had two guitar players already in the band. Peace decided to revisit the harmonica to see what it could bring to the group. It turns out, a lot. Harmonicas work by the player blowing out or sucking in air through holes on the front of the instrument. The air passes over small reeds that vibrate to make a sound. The length and width of the reed determines its pitch.Simple enough. But hidden in those reeds are more notes. One harmonica can't play a full scale. It takes practice to find those hidden notes."I have to bend that on the draw, and I do that with technique," Peace said. "That real bluesy sound, thatself storages how you get that: by bending the notes."That's easier said than done, though. Peace's best advice to bending a note is practice, knowing the instrument. Once it's achieved, it takes the small metal instrument from a toy to a tool, a sound that makes a rich contribution to blues, folk, rock or any genre if played right. But Peace can help players get to that point of bending notes. It's all in the guts of the instrument, which he discovered after repairing and building his own harmonicas."If you modify these and make them more airtight, it's a whole lot easier to get that," Peace said. "I equate that to buying a cheap guitar with the strings high up off the neck or having a nice guitar with nice low action to hit the notes and bend the notes."Peace uses a tiny scraper and a huge magnifying glass to carefully scratch the brass innards of a harmonica. Each scrape changes the delicate instrument's sound, so one too many could ruin that reed. It takes some trial and error, but using a tuner, Peace can find the sweet spot. For those who play professionally like Markham, Peace's work makes the difference."He can rebuild them and/or hot rod them. It's not your everyday normal specs," Markham said. "In the hands of someone that does play professionally, there's a difference. To the everyday ear, it probably wouldn't be noticeable."Now that he's retired, Peace has a lot more time for the harmonicas. Peace's services have been used by harmonica players across the country. He's had work from players in Chicago, Alabama, Arkansas and locally, including jazz and blues singer Cindy Cain.Peace still enjoys playing the instrument whenever he can. He regularly attends the Route 66 Harmonica Club meetings in Tulsa, which includes a monthly jam session with several area harmonica players. His workshop behind his house doubles as a professional recording studio where several have made albums, including Tulsa blues guitarist Little Joe McLerran. He also has been a part of the Harmonica Summit, a day of workshops and lessons for all ages to learn the ins and outs of the instrument as well as concerts that stretch into the night with several area bands and harmonica players. The fifth year of the summit is coming up March 1 at the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame, Peace said. It's open to anyone interested in playing or learning about the instrument or music, all experience levels welcome. With a resurgence of the folk music genre and blues' perpetual presence, Peace said he sees more people looking at the kids toy a little differently."If me and some friends go to a jam session and there's umpteen guitar players coming up and jamming, to get people's attention, you whip out a harmonica and start playing," Peace said. "It brings another element to it. It's not the same old same old. If it's done right and done well -- or even if its done badly -- you get people's attention."Jerry Wofford 918-581-8346jerry.wofford@tulsaworld.comCopyright: ___ (c)2014 Tulsa World (Tulsa, Okla.)

Honoring a truly priceless heritage
By Martin Banks For China Daily Few people realize that China has the world’s second-highest number of United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture-listed World Heritage sites. Only Italy, with 49 to China’s 45, has more monuments and historical buildings on the World Heritage List, which features 981 in total. Despite great achievements in preserving its cultural relics, problems still exist in China. According to statistics from the latest national archaeological survey, more than 40,000 immovable cultural relics have vanished in the past 30 years, with half of them destroyed by construction work. Earlier last year, two centuries-old temples in Beijing — Songzhu Temple and Zhizhu Temple — were transformed into two upmarket dining clubs. Recently, Liu Xiang Mansion, one of the cultural relics under protection in Chongqing, the metropolis in the nation’s southwest, was quietly turned into a luxury restaurant. It now boasts a notice board that proclaims, “Exclusive Club. Enter upon invitation.” While such moves have again raised concerns about the protection of cultural relics, China continues to strengthen its position at the top of the world’s cultural heritage “league table”. In June, UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee added China’s Xinjiang Tianshan natural site, one of the world’s largest mountain ranges, and the Honghe Hani Rice Terraces to the World Heritage list. Of China’s 45 sites, 31 are cultural heritage sites, 10 are natural heritage sites and four are mixed sites. The Honghe Hani Rice Terraces are the subject of a major new photographic exhibition in Brussels featuring 15 of China’s UNESCO world heritage sites. The exhibition, which runs until Jan 10 at the Brussels Press Club in the heart of the European Union quarter, received the support of Liao Liqiang, China’s ambassador to Belgium. The exhibition, which opened on Dec 11, includes award-winning photographs of some of the best-known sites, such as the 5,000 kilometer Great Wall, which in 1987 became the first Chinese site to be included on UNESCO’s list. Also featured are two other tourist favorites, Beijing’s Imperial Palace Museum (the Forbidden City) and the Summer Palace. Badly damaged during the war in 1860, the Summer Palace, also known for its collection of 40,000 cultural relics, has been listed since 1998 when it was placed under State protection. But jaw-dropping phot迷你倉最平s of lesser known relics such as the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, Gansu, and Mount Taishan in Tai’an, Shandong, are also included. The sheer beauty and majesty of all the featured sites have already drawn glowing praise from visitors, who have included senior officials from nearby EU institutions. A diplomat at the Chinese Mission to the EU in charge of cultural affairs, welcomes such international exposure of China’s cultural heritage. “We are glad to see that at the moment, there are 45 UNESCO heritage sites in China,” he says. “Recognition by UNESCO is very helpful in raising people’s awareness of those places and enhancing China’s soft power. “Ever since joining the World Heritage Convention in 1985, China has been very active in protecting its heritage sites. Yet it will remain a challenge for us to have the best expertise in an extensive range of fields so we can better manage those sites for future generations.” These comments are echoed by a UNESCO source. “The world’s heritage needs to be preserved and handed over to future generations. UNESCO and its member states play a crucial role in this task. “Through these photos, we discover the diversity in China that constitutes a priceless heritage for humanity.” Further recognition of the importance of China’s cultural contribution to the world came a few years ago with the launch of a new Chinese edition of the UNESCO World Heritage Review magazine. It publishes feature articles on China’s imperial sites and gardens, ancient Chinese cities and towns, sacred monuments and religious grottoes. To be included on the World Heritage List, sites must be of “outstanding universal value” and meet at least one of 10 selection criteria. China, of course, is a country richly endowed with culture. The Chinese economy was transformed by Deng Xiaoping’s economic reforms that began in the late 1970s and it has not looked back since. Modern Chinese cultural exports have been a mainstay in homes across the world over the past few decades. Pop culture icons such as Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan are global figures. Chinese action movies are popular all over the world. The discovery in Xi’an in 1974 of the Terracotta Army — sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang (260-210 BC), the first emperor of China — highlighted the depth of Chinese culture. The sculptures were buried alongside the emperor to protect him in the afterlife.
