Group setting up $100m fund to invest in new-media businessesSINGAPORE Press Holdings (SPH) has said its full-year net profit fell 25 per cent to $431 million, mainly due to the adoption of a different accounting policy. With the establishment of the SPH Reit, the group changed its accounting policy for investment properties from cost to a fair-value basis. As a result, SPH posted a fair-value gain of $111.4 million from its investment properties for the year ended Aug 31, down 43.9 per cent from the year before.Operating revenue for the year edged down 2.6 per cent to $1.24 billion. The media and property firm has proposed a final dividend of 15 cents a share, comprising a normal dividend of eight cents and a special dividend of seven cents.Together with the interim dividend of seven cents and special dividend of 18 cents announced earlier in the financial year, the total dividend payout is a record 40 cents.Revenue for the newspaper and magazine business fell 3.9 per cent to $991.2 million as both advertising and circulation revenue fell.Rental income at its retail properties, however, rose 3.5 per cent to $198.1 million, mainly due to higher rental rates at Paragon.SPH has a 70 per cent stake in SPH Reit, which owns Paragon and Clementi Mall.Full-year earnings per share slipped to 27 cents from 36 cents previously, while net asset value per share as at Aug 31 eased to $2.19 from $2.28 a year earlier.Faced with a challenging environment of changing media consumption trends, SPH chie迷你倉最平 executive Alan Chan said the company is studying new growth opportunities while exploring ways to reinvigorate its core media business. For example, the company has identified a list of cost-saving initiatives, such as making changes to its work flow to better utilise its printing presses. This series of projects, when implemented over the next year or so, is targeted at delivering $19 million in savings every year, Mr Chan said.SPH is also setting up a $100 million new-media fund to invest in media-related businesses.Up to now, the firm has mostly focused on major investments, such as ST701 and regional media websites "where we go in big and try to occupy the space", said Mr Chan. The new-media fund is targeted at taking smaller stakes, he said, which means that there will be smaller investments in different new media organisations. Mr Chan added that in the process, these technologies can be used to enhance SPH's existing business. "These investments will play a critical role to support our aspiration to be the leading multimedia company in Asia," he said. The firm's move to offer digital subscriptions for some of its newspapers has also helped to boost overall circulation.Total average daily circulation for The Straits Times has risen 15 per cent over the past year to 449,200, mainly due to an increase in digital subscriptions.SPH shares closed one cent lower at $4.12.The results were released after the market closed. SPH Reit shares rose half a cent to 97.5 cents.yasminey@sph.com.sg迷你倉

Source: Ventura County Star, Calif.儲存Oct. 11--It was one of the most memorable games in Cal Lutheran football history. Two years ago, CLU staged a dramatic comeback under the lights to beat Redlands 28-24 in the first game ever played in William Rolland Stadium.CLU trailed 24-0 at halftime before scoring 28 unanswered points in the second half. The Kingsmen capped the rally with a 98-yard drive for the game-winning touchdown with 16 seconds remaining. The rivals will return to the scene Saturday night with many of the same elements in play.Kickoff is slated for 7:05 p.m. and CLU will once again be wearing its special black jerseys."It is a fun rivalry to be a part of and it seems like everything is magnified a little bit in these games," CLU head coach Ben McEnroe said. "The guys are hitting each other a little bit harder and playing a little bit faster. I have a lot of memories over the years coaching and playing in these games, and it's a big deal in that regard."CLU's great escape against Redlands was the closest the Kingsmen have come to having their 28-game Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference winning streak snapped. Both teams recorded their first wins of the season last weekend to open SCIAC play. Redlands (1-2, 1-0) beat Occidental 38-21 while CLU (1-2, 1-0) routed Pomona-Pitzer 42-7."The big thing for us was just getting some self-confidence back," McEnroe said. "There is a little bit more swagger and more energy after you win. It's kind of like a shot in the arm."CLU and Redlands introduced an added incentive to the rivalry last year by playing for the Smudge Pot. The trophy celebrates the citrus industries in Ventura and San Bernardino counties.Following last year's victory, CLU brought the Smudge Pot back to campus and painted imini storage in the university colors."We haven't put a lot of emphasis on that this week, to be honest with you," McEnroe said. "We set it down by the exit so everybody can see it on the way out of the building. But right now we are staying focused on us and trying not to have a lot of clutter in our head."Although McEnroe wants to see the same end result as two years ago, he would prefer it happen without the inauspicious beginning."I think the big thing is to harness the energy in a positive manner," McEnroe said. "Like any other source of energy, it can be destructive. But there are ways to harness it and I think we learned that from two years ago when we came out wide-eyed looking up at the lights and the huge crowd and freaked out."Redlands (1-2, 1-0 SCIAC) at Cal Lutheran (1-2, 1-0)WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, 7:05 p.m., William Rolland StadiumSeries history: CLU leads 23-18.LAST YEAR: CLU defeated Redlands 45-35.GAME FACTS: CLU expects its run defense to be tested. Redlands rushed for 424 yards in a victory over Occidental. RBs Bobby Brown and Curtis Tanquary have both run for 198 yards this season. Junior QB Kevin Russell, who started against Occidental, has completed 16 of 25 passes for 183 yards. Junior LB Michael Tootle leads the Redlands defense with 28 total tackles. CLU Sr. RB Wayne Chapman is averaging 115.7 yards per game and 7.2 yards per carry. CLU senior QB Cameron Deen has completed 44 of 77 passes for 520 yards and four touchdowns. Source: Daily Camera, Boulder, Colo.儲存Oct. 10--Legendary Boulder-born astronaut Scott Carpenter -- who in 1962 became the second American to orbit the Earth and the first person to explore both the heights of space and depths of the ocean -- died Thursday in Denver with his wife at his side. He was 88.Along with John Glenn, who flew three months before him, Carpenter was one of the last two survivors of the original Mercury 7 astronauts for the fledgling U.S. space program. He lived in Vail until a few weeks ago, when he suffered a stroke that put him in Swedish Medical Center and, eventually, The Denver Hospice at Lowry."On Sunday, we watched the Broncos-Dallas game and he was very verbal," his daughter Candy Carpenter said Thursday. But he took a turn for the worse the next day and never recovered.Candy Carpenter, 57, said her father died peacefully at 5:30 a.m. of complications from the stroke with his wife, Patty Barrett, by his side."He wanted to be the best pilot, he wanted to be the best navigator, he wanted to be the best father, he wanted to be the best diver," Candy Carpenter said. "He wanted to be the best at everything."She said he also came from an era when astronauts regularly put their lives on the line testing out new equipment and new technologies in situations and conditions humans had never before faced."That was one of the things he was most proud of was to be able to go to space and prove or disprove all those fears," she said. "He loved machines."Gordon Page, founder of the Spirit of Flight Center in Erie, credits Carpenter with setting the stage for the hundreds of astronauts who would come after him. He was part of a select group of early space explorers who likely didn't fully recognize just how much their bravery and determination would push forward an industry that now plays an instrumental role in both Boulder County and Colorado as a whole, Page said."I see him as the starting point -- look at all the jobs and technological advances that just these few guys played a role in producing," Page said. "It was a unique point in American history that allowed people to break records and go further than ever before without a lot of red tape and budget issues."'Willingly give my life'Carpenter, who was born in Boulder on May 1, 1925, as Malcolm Scott Carpenter (he hated his first name and didn't use it), began to look skyward for inspiration at a very young age."The big influence for my father as a 5-year-old was seeing Lowry Air Force Base being built and Stapleton Airport being built," daughter Kris Stoever said Thursday. "It was the first time he saw an airplane overhead."His maternal grandparents raisedCarpenter after his mother became ill with tuberculosis and his parents split up. Stoever said her father loved climbing the Flatirons and pastured a horse, named Lady Luck, at the base of Flagstaff Mountain."Boulder formed my father," she said. And he was recognized by the city. A park at 30th Street and Arapahoe Avenue was after the astronaut, while Boulder's Aurora 7 Elementary took its name from Carpenter's Mercury capsule. Scott Carpenter Park was rededicated last year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his space flight.Carpenter graduated from Boulder High in 1943 and went on to the University of Colorado, but only attended one semester before joining the Navy's V-12a training program, designed to help train pilots during World War II.He returned to CU to study aeronautical engineering, but, in 1949, rejoined the Navy and continued his pilot training -- one course short of finishing his bachelor's degree. On April 9, 1959, after a decade in the Navy, the newly formed National Aeronautics and Space Administration announced that Carpenter was one of seven chosen to be part of its first astronaut group, which came to be known as the Mercury 7.The launch into space on the morning of May 24, 1962, was nerve-racking for the Navy pilot."You're looking out at a totally black sky, seeing an altimeter reading of 90,000 feet and realize you are going straight up. And the thought crossed my mind: 'What am I doing?'" Carpentersaid 49 years later in a joint lecture with Glenn at the Smithsonian Institution. For Carpenter, the momentary fear was worth it, he said in 2011: "The view of Mother Earth and the weightlessness is an addictive combination of senses."For the veteran Navy officer, flying in space or diving to the ocean floor was more than a calling. In 1959, soon after being chosen one of NASA's pioneering seven astronauts, Carpenter wrote about his hopes, concluding: "This is something I would willingly give my life for."Three months later, Carpenter was launched into space from Cape Canaveral, Fla., and completed three orbits around Earth in his space capsule, the Aurora 7, which he named after the celestial event. It was just a coincidence, Carpenter said, that he grew up on the corner of Aurora Avenue and Seventh Street in Boulder. His four hours, 39 minutes and 32 seconds of weightlessness were "the nicest thing that ever happened to me," Carpenter told a NASA historian. "The zero-g sensation and the visual sensation of spaceflight are transcending experiences and I wish everybody could have them."His trip led to many discoveries about spacecraft navigation and space itself, such as that space offers almost no resistance, which he found out by trailing a balloon. Carpenter said astronauts in the Mercury program found most of their motivation from the space race with the Russians. When he completed his orbit of the Earth, he said he thought: "Hooray, we're tied with the Soviets," who had completed two manned orbits at that time.'We may have... lost an astronaut'But things started to go wrong on re-entry. He was low on fuel and a key instrument that tells the pilot which way the capsule is pointing malfunctioned, forcing Carpenter to manually take over control of the landing. NASA's Mission Control then announced that he would overshoot his landing zone by more than 200 miles and, worse, they had lost contact with him.Talking to a suddenly solemn nation, CBS newsman Walter Cronkite told the audience: "We may have ... lost an astronaut."At a time when astronauts achieved fame on par with rock stars, folks across the country sat glued to their TV smini storagereens, anxiously awaiting the outcome of Carpenter's mission. Dave Klaus, a professor in aerospace engineering sciences at CU, said the routine nature of space travel today and the assurances people take from that simply didn't exist then."There was a lot of unknowns and a lot of uncertainty at that time," Klaus said. But Carpenter survived the landing that day.Always cool under pressure -- his heart rate never went above 105 during the flight -- he oriented himself by simply peering out the space capsule's window. The Navy found him in the Caribbean, floating in his life raft with his feet propped up. He offered up some of his space rations.Carpenter's perceived nonchalance didn't sit well some with NASA officials, particularly flight director Chris Kraft. The two feuded about it from then on.Kraft accused Carpenter of being distracted and behind schedule, as well as making poor decisions. He blamed Carpenter for the low fuel.On his website, Carpenter acknowledged that he didn't shut off a switch at the right time, doubling fuel loss. Still, in his 2003 memoir, he wrote: "I think the data shows that the machine failed."From deep space to deep seasCarpenter never did go back in space, but his explorations continued. In 1965, he spent 30 days under the ocean off the coast of California as part of the Navy's SeaLab II program. Once again the motivation was both fear and curiosity."I wanted, No. 1, to learn about it (the ocean), but No. 2, I wanted to get rid of what was an unreasoned fear of the deep water," Carpenter told the NASA historian.Inspired by Jacques Cousteau, Carpenter worked with the Navy to bring some of NASA's training and technology to the sea floor. A broken arm kept him out of the first SeaLab, but he made the second in 1965. The 57-by-12-foot habitat was lowered to a depth of 205 feet off San Diego. A bottlenose dolphin named Tuffy ferried supplies from the surface to the aquanauts below."SeaLab was an apartment, but it was very crowded. Ten men lived inside. We worked very hard. We slept very little," he recalled in a 1969 interview. Years later, he said he actually preferred his experience on the ocean floor to his time in space."In the overall scheme of things, it's the underdog in terms of funding and public interest," he said. "They're both very important explorations. One is much more glorious than the other. Both have tremendous potential."After another stint at NASA in the mid-1960s, helping develop the Apollo lunar lander, Carpenter returned to the SeaLab program as director of aquanaut operations for SeaLab III.He retired from the Navy in 1969, founded his company Sea Sciences Inc., worked closely with Cousteau and dove in most of the world's oceans, including under the ice in the Arctic. When the 77-year-old Glenn returned to orbit in 1998 aboard space shuttle Discovery, Carpenter radioed: "Good luck, have a safe flight and ... once again, Godspeed, John Glenn."His influence felt at CUAt CU, Carpenter will be primarily remembered for his legacy in space.Klaus said there have been 20 astronauts affiliated in some way with CU, including Kalpana Chawla, who was killed in the Columbia accident in 2003, and Ellison Onizuka, who died in the Challenger accident in 1986."He was the first of a long string of astronauts that came out of CU," he said. "He was a living legend."Klaus remembers Carpenter making a visit to CU about 10 years ago, where a number of aerospace engineering students put on a presentation for him. Carpenter told Klaus that he was fascinated with the latest advancements in space travel technology and materials and would welcome the chance to start all over again learning about the field."He was excited to see the next generation coming up," Klaus said.CU-Boulder Chancellor Phil DiStefano said Thursday that Carpenter will be "sorely missed.""In his two-decades-long career as a Naval aviator, astronaut and aquanaut, Scott Carpenter brought honor and distinction to CU-Boulder while embodying the adventurous spirit of our nation," DiStefano said. "Our space program, and all space and ocean researchers everywhere, owe him a debt of gratitude."Although Carpenter was one course requirement short of graduating with a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering when he left CU in 1949, the university awarded him his degree in 1962 following the successful Aurora 7 flight. When presenting the degree to Carpenter, then-CU President Quigg Newton noted that "his subsequent training as an astronaut has more than made up for his deficiency in the subject of heat transfer."Stoever, who co-wrote with her father the book "For Spacious Skies: The Uncommon Journey of a Mercury Astronaut," said there's no doubt her father's time at CU helped boost the school's aeronautical engineering reputation."Being a Project Mercury astronaut gave CU a lot of cachet," she said.Great father, great teacherBut at the heart of it all, Stoever said, Carpenter was a man, a father and a great teacher."He was unusual in his generation for being gentle, kind and patient," she said. "He loved explaining how to do things the right way."Candy Carpenter said her father, who married four times and had eight children, shone in areas much more grounded than space travel. He wrote two novels: "The Steel Albatross" and "Deep Flight." And he absolutely loved music.Candy Carpenter said she'll always remember her father singing and playing guitar. When she had to be flown by rescue helicopter from her home in Big Elk Meadows in Larimer County during last month's floods, Carpenter said besides grabbing her dog, she made sure to bring with her the Gretsch guitar her father bought with Glenn in New York City in 1957.His children all picked up the instrument, Candy Carpenter said, and she went on to become a guitar teacher in Longmont."And that was because he played guitar," she said. "He was a fabulous teacher, had a great sense of humor and was handsome as the Devil."The Associated Press contributed to this reportContact Camera Staff Writer John Aguilar at 303-473-1389, aguilarj@dailycamera.com or twitter.com/abuvthefold.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Daily Camera (Boulder, Colo.) Source: Portland Press Herald, MaineOct.mini storage 10--The Natural Resources Council of Maine on Thursday released a report showing that Maine's Department of Environmental Protection possesses documents that reveal that an open-pit mine at Bald Mountain in Aroostoock County is likely to pollute rivers, lakes and streams with sulfuric acid runoff and arsenic pollution. These documents have not been made public and have been withheld from state legislators. The state has proposed new open-pit mining regulations, but for a major rule change such as this, members of the Board of Environmental Protection, along with the full Legislature, must approve any regulatory modifications, said Nick Bennett, staff scientist with NRCM.The council's report comes just one week before the Board of Environmental Protection is set to hold a public hearing on proposed draft rules developed over the last 18 months by the DEP and its mining industry consultant North Jackson Co. of Marquette, Mich. The rules change was required under 2012 mining legislation pushed by J.D. Irving Ltd., of New Brunswick, which has proposed mining at Bald Mountain. The BEP hearing will be held Thursday, Oct. 17, at 9 a.m. at the Augusta Civic Center.Opponents of the proposed revisions, including environmental advocates, mining experts and engineering specialists, have questioned whose interests are being served by the new rules -- the public trust and environmental protection or Irving's plans. The NRCM report, "Bald Mountain Mining Risks: Hidden from the Public," draws on studies done by consultants for two mining companies that in the 1980s and 1990s pursued DEP permits for open-pit mining at Bald Mountain, said Bennett. The documents, secured by environmental risk manager Lindsay Newland Bowker of Science & Research in the Public Interest in Stonington and NRCM in Augusta through Freedom of Access Act (FOAA) requests, include repeated warnings that an open-pit mine at Bald Mountain would be very risky. Both mining companies -- Boliden and Black Hawk -- abandoned their mining plans largely because of the potential environmental risks and difficulties with mining operations at the Bald Mountain ore deposit."There's a lot of opposition and concern," said Bennett. "This is a really dangerous site. And once groundwater contamination starts, it's incredibly difficult to control."Heather Parent, policy director for DEP, said the NRCM report included "flat out lies and misrepresentations."DEP technical staff have been involved in every step of the rule-making process, she said."They helped us recraft the law to make it more protective," she said.Canada-based J.D. Irving Ltd. has expressed interest in open-pit mining at Bald Mountain and has been instrumental in having Maine's mining regulations revised and streamlined, or relaxed, to enable quicker approval of proposals to extract metals from sites around the state. Irving has described the Bald Mountain project as having a 500-acre footprint with a 100-acre open pit, valued by some estimates at billions of dollars and offering the prospect of as many as 700 direct and indirect jobs for the economically strapped northern Maine economy. Earlier job projections by other mining companies estimated the number of jobs would run between 75 and 130 positions.Technical experts for DEP and the two mining companies have repeatedly concluded that an open-pit mine at Bald Mountian would by extremely difficult, risky and costly because of high concentrations of sulfur and arsenic at the site, said Bennett. When exposed to air and water, the sulfur forms sulfuric acid, known as acid mine drainage (AMD). Sulfuric acid is a toxic component in car batteries, fertilizers, wastewater treatment and oil refininself storage -- and is one of the most widely used industrial manufacturing chemicals. In the mining process, the acid leaches out metals -- including arsenic, lead, cadmium, mercury, copper and zinc -- that occur naturally in the rock and causes them to seep into groundwater, rivers and lakes, Bennett said. Many of these heavy metals are extremely toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms, he said."The history of mining in Maine and across the country has been bad," Bennett said. The environmental risks at Bald Mountain and other sites in Maine should prompt more vigorous monitoring and regulations, not less, he said. "But DEP never let its technical folks to testify on this issue. Essentially they never spoke out to the Legislature."We don't want weakened rules to pass," Bennett said. "We'd like strict mining rules." He said NRCM endorses a return to the regulatory process outlined in LD 1302, which last spring passed in the House but failed by three votes in the Senate. The council has consistently backed rules that would require more responsibility for mining companies for any extraction operations -- and any resulting environmental damage that might occur.Bennett said the employment projections are "highly suspect" and that Irving has refused to to make public the analysis that resulted in estimates of several hundred jobs."Mining companies are notorious for underestimating environmental risks and overpromising jobs, and that's what we're seeing here in Maine with Irving's promotion of a mine at Bald Mountain," said Bennett. "Our report shows that DEP is fully aware that an open-pit mine at Bald Mountian could have huge environmental impacts, with relatively small and short-lived economic returns, yet DEP has failed to share this informtaion with lawmakers and the public."Newland Bowker, who has devoted nearly all her time for two years to closely study the Maine mining statute, rules, history and mining operations, said "the jobs simply are not there."Some of the internal DEP documents secured by NRCM were developed for the Swedish mining firm Boliden Resources, whose consultants found that an open-pit mine at Bald Mountain would likely never be able to meet water quality standards due to the likelihood that acid mine drainage would pollute surrounding waters. In the mid-1990s, Boliden sold its mineral rights to Black Hawk Mining Inc., which began the permitting process with DEP for a much smaller open-pit mine. Documents in DEP's files show that DEP's technical staff at that time believed that even this smaller mine would cause unacceptable risks to groundwater because of high arsenic levels. The NRCM report also includes assessments from the geologist who discovered the Bald Mountain ore deposit and has said that an open-pit mine at Bald Mountain would cause major environmental problems.Bowker said she has no conviction that BEP will change course following next week's public hearing."I'm not expecting a miracle here," she said. But she said a return to previous recommendations for rule changes that failed to gain approval from the full Legislature last spring would be insufficient protection. "It just is not a fix," she said.Bowker said the proposed rules set for public hearing are "pure jibberish" and that the state needed to get authentic and substantial help from a fully qualified mining expert to make sure environmental concerns would be met."It's not fair to ask people to comment on a rule that makes no sense," said Bowker. The full NRCM report and background materials are available at .nrcm.org.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Portland Press Herald (Portland, Maine) Visit the Portland Press Herald (Portland, Maine) at .pressherald.com Distributed by MCT Information Servicesmini storage
