About 40 first responders plowed through more than 100 pages of material."Today we're learning about massive pipelines and how to respond to large-scale incidents," said Joel Landis, training officer for Somerset County Department of Emergency Services."We look at emergencies across the nation where pipelines have burst and look at what they did to mitigate the situation," he said.Students learned how to handle natural and manmade disasters involving crude oil, liquid and natural gas pipelines."We focused on the natural gas industry, but the principals can apply to any pipelin迷你倉 emergency," said Jeff Shearman, adjunct instructor for the Pennsylvania Fire Academy.Shearman and Jim Wetzel teamed to teach the responders what to do and what not to do."Some people may look at a valve right next to where the fire is and want to shut the valve off, thinking it will eliminate the problem. But they may not know what caused the fire," Shearman said. "Closing the valve could create more problems downstream."Any action taken should be under the direction of the pipeline operator, he said.Central City fire Chief Dale Russian said the training was valuable even for those who could not attend."In this day and age, we can be called anywhere in the county or out of the county," he said. "What we picked up today we'll take it back to our members and have training back at the station."The seminar was sponsored by the state fire commissioner and the Pennsylvania Fire Academy.Patrick Buchnowski is a reporter with The Tribune-Democrat.
