Source: Journal Star, Peoria, Ill.mini storageOct. 02--PEORIA -- The impact of the federal shutdown on central Illinois business may be hard to measure right now, but it's definitely not good.So says Mary Ardapple, interim president of the Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce."It definitely has an impact on the small business community when people that are laid off don't stop for coffee or a meal as they once did," she said.Another problem that could make things difficult for firms across the country is that the processing of government-backed loans to small businesses will be suspended during the shutdown. In general, the shutdown is just bad for business, said Ardapple."It's bad for citizen morale. We lose confidence in the federal government when we see they can't come to a consensus," she said. The shutdown comes at a bad time, said Ardapple. "This is a distraction for business owners who are beginning to plan budgets for the fourth quarter, often the most important quarter of the year."Rhett Buttle, VP of external affairs for Small Business Majority, a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy group for small businesses, said the fourth quarter is vital for many firms."(The fourth quarter) is when many businesses go from red to black. They rely on customers coming in the door," he said.Dallas Hancock, CEO of the Peoria Area Association of Realtors, said the shutdown also had a negative effect on the area's housing market.Nationally, the housing market had been making a comeback, but a lengthy shutdow迷你倉 could slow that progress, she said."Consumer confidence affects everything, especially in the purchase of a home," Hancock said. The federal deadlock could also mean delays for first-time home buyers seeking mortgages backed by the government."Certain types of loans will be affected (by the shutdown), such as FHA loans and rural development loans," said Teresa Hull, who heads the mortgage department at Busey Bank, 6699 N. Sheridan Road. The Federal Housing Administration guarantees about 30 percent of home mortgages across the country.Another casualty of the government gridlock is information. If the government remains shut down, the unemployment report for September will not be released, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Tuesday. The agency added it would not collect data or issue reports during the shutdown.Look for the government's use of social media to also slow down. Most agency posts on Twitter and other social media went dark once legislators failed to arrive at a compromise Monday."Unless an emergency, it should be reasonably expected that most (social media) accounts will cease engaging and posting, as with other services," noted the General Services Administration.___Steve Tarter can be reached at 686-3260 or starter@pjstar.com.
