Source: The Palm Beach Post, Fla.迷你倉價錢Aug. 09--PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- So much for that much anticipated Tiger Woods-Phil Mickelson showdown in this year's PGA Championship. While Woods and Mickelson were struggling to matching 1-over-par 71's, veteran Jim Furyk and Masters champion Adam Scott captured the spotlight Thursday, sharing the first-round lead after a pair of 5-under 65's at Oak Hill Country Club. While Woods and Mickelson finished with the same score, their rounds were almost exact opposites. Woods was 2-under after six holes, then went backwards, with a bogey at No. 13 and a double-bogey at 18. Mickelson hit his drive over a fence on his fourth hole for a double-bogey that put him 3-over, then grinded his way back to 1-under only to also finish with a double-bogey.Furyk, 43, whose last splash in a major came when he shared the third-round lead in the 2012 U.S. Open before fading to fourth, had six birdies before his lone bogey on his final hole prevented him from tying the course record of 64.Playing in his 70th major, and having won one, the 2003 U.S. Open, Furyk wasn't making much of his accomplishment."I'm happy I played a good round. Trust me, I'll be in a good mood the rest of the day," he said. "But I'm wise enough and been there enough that, it is only Thursday. Right now we are just jockeying for position."Scott, whose major record this year already includes the Masters win and a tie for third in the British Open, looked like he might go very low after stringing five consecutive birdies from Nos. 4-8. But a thunderstorm halted play for 70 minutes soon afterward and he went even par the rest of the way."Probably the best run I've ever had," Scott said of his five straight birdies. "I just hit really nice shots and didn't leave myself too much work."Weather played a role throughout the day. Overnight showers left the course soft for the half of the field that played in the morning, and many made the most of it including David Hearn, whose most notable achievement in his spotty career has been being from the same hometown (Brantford, Ontario) as Wayne Gretzy. Birdies on five of his first 11 holes gave Hearn the lead at one juncture."I'll be doing everything I can to make Brantford proud and give them another athlete to cheer for, for sure," said Hearn, who is tied for third with Lee Wes迷你倉庫wood at 4-under.Later in the day, the 70-minute rain delay had a negative effect on a number of players including Westwood, who missed a 5-foot birdie putt at No. 13 on his first stroke after the restart. But Westwood, who only three weeks ago had held the third-round lead at the British Open before a final-round 75 dropped him to third, regrouped and went 1-under the rest of the way."After the Open, I could have looked upon it as disappointing, but as a golfer, you try to take the positives out of it and carry on," he said. "There was a bit of a backlash last week at (Bridgestone); I struggled to get into it. I managed to get focused again this week and I felt very calm out there."Matt Kuchar and Jason Day would appear to be the most formidable contenders among the seven-man group at 3-under. Kuchar has already won twice this year and was second two weeks ago at the Canadian Open, while Day already has four top-three finishes in majors in his young career, including two this year, a third at the Masters and a second at the U.S. Open.As the day unfolded, one thing became apparent: Shotmakers, such as Furyk and Scott, have every chance to keep up with the big hitters on a course that, while not overly long, features narrow fairways and punishing rough."You can hit driver if you want to," said Furyk, who hit seven of them, more than most of the field. "But the fairway becomes about two-thirds the size as you go down it. So it's easier to get 3-wood in the fairway than driver and easier to get 2-iron in the fairway than 3-wood."So can Furyk keep it going? While he's got six top-five finishes in majors along with that '03 Open title, none of them have come in the PGA, and his best finish in the last 10 years in this event was 24th in 2010."This sport beats you up," he said. "You've got to take your lumps. I've always been very good at looking at the situation and figuring out how I could make it better. You know, never really feeling sorry for myself, but it gets me down for a while, and a couple days later, you get over it and start working hard, to figure out how you're going to make it better the next time."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Palm Beach Post (West Palm Beach, Fla.)
