  • Volunteer to succeed longtime leader at St. Vincent de Paul

Source: The Columbian, Vancouver, Wash. Dec. 25--For Gary Wright, leading the Vancouver conference of St. Vincent de Paul is all about personal connections. He realized that when his simple urge to do somebody some good by putting in grunt work -- making bread pickups and unpacking boxes, he figured -- had him visiting with desperate people, hearing their stories, offering counseling and comfort as well as emergency food and cash."It's life-changing," said Wright, 60, whose rise through the ranks of volunteers will be complete on Jan. 1, when he takes over from Dick Lauer as executive director of Clark County's largest individual food pantry. According to its most recent fiscal year statement, the Vancouver conference of St. Vincent de Paul, an international Catholic lay organization, gave out nearly $2.5 million in food, clothing, housewares, Christmas gifts -- and grants of emergency cash for rent, utilities, transportation and more -- between October 2012 and September 2013. Its warehouse at 2456 N.E. Stapleton Road is open five days a week, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.Life-changing how? It's all about serving needy people without hesitation or judgment."We don't ask a lot of questions. We are looking at the need," said Wright. "It's an adjustment for me and my heart. A lot of people pass through those doors with a lot of needs."Some of them are planning and striving for better. Some are doing the best they can, but they're simply stuck -- because of everything from disabilities to an economy that still isn't generating many new jobs. And some haven't a clue about anything beyond hand-to-mouth survival -- and never will, thanks to disadvantages such as mental illness and hard-core addiction."A lot of them are people who come here for a long time," said Lauer. "We get to know them. So many of them are never going to get out of where they're at.""You sure learn a lot about people's individual situations and their hardships," said operations manager Sylvia Van. "Every day is something new. Sometimes you sit and pray with them or even cry with them."Much joy, little cashLauer started with St. Vincent de Paul as a volunteer in 1986. It was a small operation then, he said, which moved here and there over the years. Its first paid director wasn't hired until 1988. Lauer took the job in 1996."I didn't think I'd be doing this kind of work," said Lauer, who labored for years in printing sales before his volunteerism with St. Vincent de Paul went from curious and occasional to passionate and constant. "I developed a feel for what we're doing," he said, and an appreciation for rewards like true friendship and belief in the mission, he said. "It's a joy to come to work," he said.On the other hand, he discovered for himself -- like Wright after him -- just how huge poverty has grown underneath the radar, he said. Not long ago, he said, "you could drive around Vancouver and everything looked great. But you didn't see what was really happening," he said.Poverty is much more widespread and obvious now, he said, and outfits like St. Vincent de Paul are feeling the pinch of federal cutbacks as well as the restructuring of the regional food bank system. The food itself sometimes runs down, and the pantr迷你倉尖沙咀 has to stretch its supplies to try to provide several days' worth of food for hungry people. Like many local sister agencies, St. Vincent de Paul offers recipients one emergency food box per month, plus the chance to browse for free clothes once every two months. That's still more than folks who come for cash usually get. Emergency financial assistance for pressing needs such as rent and utilities is almost always a once-in-a-lifetime gift, Lauer said."We help less than 10 percent who call" for emergency rental or utility help, Lauer said. The organization's fall 2013 newsletter says it typically gets nearly 200 calls for cash assistance each month."We can help 15 to 20 per month," he said. "That's the money we budgeted. We have to say no an awful lot. That's when it gets hard."Few local agencies provide emergency cash assistance, he added. The Salvation Army in east Vancouver and the Interfaith Treasure House in Washougal are among them -- and "they're all out of money," he said.Church collectionsAbout two-thirds of the approximate $300,000 annual budget of the Vancouver conference of St. Vincent de Paul comes directly from collection plates and envelopes at the four local Catholic churches that make up the conference: St. James, St. Joseph, Our Lady of Lourdes and Holy Redeemer. The Vancouver conference limits its services to people from that "southern section" of Clark County, Lauer said. Separate conferences in Brush Prairie and east county raise funds and provide services to their own local folks, he said.Other than that, services are open to anyone. You don't need to belong to a particular Catholic church, or be a Catholic at all, to apply for help. In fact, Lauer said, the vast majority of people the agency touches are not Catholic. Most of the rest of the budget comes from individual donations by private people. "That's very gratifying," said Lauer. There's also a small federal grant that comes to Clark County agencies for a range of emergency services for poor people -- it's called the Emergency Food and Shelter Program -- but that grant is broken into chunks and shared among several agencies when it gets here, Lauer said. That leaves $24,000 in housing assistance -- that is, mortgage, rent and utility help -- for St. Vincent de Paul to distribute. The amount "goes down every year," Lauer said, even while the need goes up. This year, he expects a 15 percent reduction, he said. There are two-and-one-half paid staffers -- the director, an operations manager and a part-time assistant -- as well as a reliable group of about 85 volunteers at the Vancouver conference of St. Vincent de Paul, Lauer said.Wright, who spent years selling forest products, said he wants to raise the agency's profile and seek more partnerships with small businesses and others who can help. Meanwhile, Wright said, he just wants to study Lauer's secrets for success. Lauer may be retiring as leader, but he won't be permitted to disappear completely, Wright said."I have 85 new names to remember," said Wright. "I like that aspect of this job."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Columbian (Vancouver, Wash.) Visit The Columbian (Vancouver, Wash.) at .columbian.com Distributed by MCT Information Services倉

mini storage

  • On steps of county courthouses, Christian volunteers offer prayers and a kind word for all

Source: Chicago TribuneDec. 25--It didn't matter how many times Elaine Cornett walked in and out of Leighton Criminal Court Building without saying hello. The volunteers for Courtside Ministries Chicago who prayed outside every day would not give up.Sure enough, one day Cornett stopped. And that day, she says, changed her life. Cornett left behind years of drug use and prostitution, shed the ankle monitor that tracked her for 11 months and set out to become what she now believes God intended."I was really, really in denial," said Cornett, 53, now a home health aide. "I needed obedience and guidance. I moved around to another area and never looked back. For me to just up and change my lifestyle, I was delivered by God. They really blessed me."Every day, thousands of lawyers, defendants, victims of crime and witnesses to violence file into the Chicago area's many halls of justice. That's precisely why Courtside Ministries Chicago has chosen the sidewalks surrounding those halls to be their mission field. Since December 2011, the ministry has drawn volunteers from nearly 50 churches. They offer prayers, Bibles and encouragement to people confronting the consequences of their mistakes or fighting wrongful accusations.Volunteers hail from Roman Catholic, evangelical and mainline Protestant churches. That diversity is important, said chaplain and director Michael Kienapple. Otherwise people might think it's an "agenda of a particular church to fill their pews so they can get tithes and offerings."Ministers for Courtside pray daily outside the county court buildings in Maywood and Markham, and at 26th Street and California Avenue. They also minister outside the DuPage County Courthouse in Wheaton, the Daley Center, and the Porter County Courthouse in Valparaiso, Ind. This month, they began serving outside the Will County Courthouse in Joliet.Kienapple, of Valparaiso, said that in a city plagued by so much violence, the courthouse seems like the most effective place to offer light in a dark world and remind people that whatever the law is powerless to achieve, God can."This is a place of a lot of hard things going on," said Kienapple. "People come with hopelessness and despair and hurt and mental illness and addictions. We want to bring the God of hope and love and peace and power ... and that creates an atmosphere of his presence."Kienapple had been searching for a way to channel his calling several years ago when the Christian Legal Society held a conference in Chicago. There, Kienapple met lawyer Tyler Makepeace. Believing that his clients needed Jesus Christ as much as they needed his legal advice, Makepeace started Courtside Ministries in Colorado. He shared his vision with Kienapple and implored him to launch the ministry here. In addition to Chicago, the fledgling national ministry operates in Colorado and California.Makepeace also met with Cook County Chief Judge Timothy Evans, who blessed the project, Kienapple said. On a cold winter morning in 2011, Kienapple and a handful of volunteers stacked Bibles and tracts on a table draped in blue outside the Cook County criminal courthouse. They immediately encountered their first client -- a man with his head hung in shame, thankful to be free after killing a man, Kienapple said. The man, Kienapple said, a倉ked the volunteers to pray that he would never take another man's life."People encounter a God of relationship, a God of love, and in that place they get served, healed and delivered and they get on track toward referrals and churches and references that will help them make it sustainable," Kienapple said, standing in the rain at 26th and California one recent morning.Gerri Hudson emerged from the courthouse. Earlier, she had arrived flustered and late for a court appearance. But a kind word from a Courtside Ministries volunteer gave her a sense of calm and peace that lasted through the ordeal."This building has lots of negative energy," Hudson said. "So I was glad they were here."But defendants aren't the only patrons. Lawyers also seek guidance from the Courtside Ministries prayer station. Veteran criminal defense attorney John DeLeon, 62, of Riverside said he first saw the "Need Prayer?" table on his way to meet a new client. They gave him a Bible and tracts, which he shared with the young man in hopes he would contemplate the direction of his life and think about improvements. It's an approach DeLeon, a born-again Christian, takes with all his clients."I try to win their case and put them on a path where they will not become a repeat offender," he said. "Our God is a God of second chances and third and fourth and fifth. Christianity is a forgiving religion. I believe there's always hope."Now, when DeLeon has court appearances, he stops to pray at the table on the sidewalk."Frankly I believe I've seen miracles happen," said DeLeon. "I've walked in there after a prayer session with them and got a great result. I truly believe the hand of God is in everything we do."Courtside Ministries inspired defendant Gabriela Feliciano, 30, to reconsider the direction her life was headed. Even though she was found not guilty of aggravated kidnapping by reason of insanity, the courts required her to register as a sex offender because the charges involved young children."My chance didn't come until God told me it was my day and they grabbed me and saved me," she said. "You can feel their warmth when they're praying for you. You can feel glory. You can feel them pouring out their heart, telling God the truth about you."Feliciano said the support of Courtside Ministries has inspired her to build a better life for herself and her two young children."I believe God just wanted a sober life for me," she said. "Sober in the sense of away from drama and trouble."Kienapple said plenty of strangers don't accept the prayers he offers, and plenty who do don't redeem their lives right away. Still, he said, he hopes the love that he and the volunteers express outside the walls of the courthouse filter inside too."Our purpose here is to bring the love, the grace, the truth of Jesus Christ to the courthouse," Kienapple said as people rushed by, navigating around him and occasionally throwing a shoulder to avoid an encounter. "Our heart is to make this an atmosphere of God's love and his presence and his peace. When two or more gather in prayer, God is here with us. Our point is, this is a sanctuary."mbrachear@tribune.comTwitter @TribSeekerCopyright: ___ (c)2013 the Chicago Tribune Visit the Chicago Tribune at .chicagotribune.com Distributed by MCT Information Servicesmini storage
