Thailand, a beautiful and fascinating country, is known to the world for its captivat- ing landscape, abundant resources and splendid cul- ture.迷你倉 h e h ai people lead a life of prosperity. I am coming to h ailand again soon, long at er my last trip here, to pay an oi cial visit to this friendly neighbor of China. I wish to convey the warm greetings and best wishes of the Chi- nese people to our friends in h ailand. I am full of expec- tations for this visit, and I sincerely hope that the visit will give a strong boost to the traditional China-Thailand friendship and start another brilliant chapter of amity and cooperation between our two countries in a new era.China and Thailand have been good brothers since ancient times. Back in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), King Ramkhamhaeng the Great invited hundreds of Chinese craftsmen to teach ceramic techniques in Suk- hothai and Phitsanulok. By working together, the Chi- nese and local crat smen cre- ated the exquisite and unique Sangkhalok porcelain, whose beauty has been well pre- served until this day. In the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the Ayutthaya Kingdom sent more than 100 delegations to China. Its students even stud- ied at China’s Imperial Col- lege. Chinese and h ai schol- ars jointly compiled the early version of the Chinese-Thai dictionary entitled Transla- tions of Siamese. h e original copy of the dictionary is still kept at a library in Beijing.On his voyages to the west- ern seas, Chinese navigator Zheng He led his ships north- wards along the Chao Phraya River and reached today’sPhra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. He brought along to the local people the Chi- nese calendar and measuring and weighing instruments, as well as agricultural tech- niques such as the production of solar salt, well-digging and terracing. And he took back home the spices, pepper, pad- dy rice and i ne fruit tree seeds of Thailand. Through those long centuries of exchanges a deep friendship was formed.The ever-growing mutual understanding and goodwill between the two peoples has laid a solid foundation for the sound and steady growth of China-h ailand relations.Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the people of China and h ailand have worked closely together and supported each other in times of adversity. Together we tackled the Asian i nancial crisis and the international financial crisis, upholding economic stability in both our countries and the region at large. Together we fought against the SARS epidemic and bird flu, protecting the health of the people of both countries. Together we pre- vailed over the Indian Ocean tsunamis, earthquakes in China, severe l oods in h ai- land and other natural disas- ters, allowing life and work to quickly return to normal in disaster-hit areas.A storm will be followed by a rainbow. Our bilateral coop- eration has expanded rapidly and produced fruitful results across the board. China has become Thailand’s biggest source of tourists and its larg- est export market. h ailand is China’s largest source of natu- ral rubber. Among Southeast Asian countries, h ailand was the i rst to conduct strategic cooperation with China, the i rst to implement a zero-tarif arrangement on vegetables and fruit within the frame- work of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement, the i rst to complete a China Cul- ture Center and the first to receive a pair of giant pan- das for cooperative scientii c research. In fact, the pandas living in Chiang Mai have now even got a baby panda named Lin Bing. h ailand is on track to becoming the country with the largest number of consul- ates general in China.Since the turn of the centu- ry, China-h ailand relations have entered a fast track of sound growth. A compre- hensive strategic cooperative partnership has been estab- lished and there are tremen- dous opportunities and room for the expansion of coopera- tion in various i elds.We share the same devel- opment goals. China’s devel- opment will unleash even greater market demand. h is represents important coop- eration opportunities and huge cooperation space for h ailand and other ASEAN countries.h ailand is a leading pro- ducer of rice and other agri- cultural products. China will support its companies in importing 1 million tons of Thai rice in the next five years as well as more specialty produce from h ailand. Rail cooperation will become a new highlight in our bilat- eral cooperation. China has gained rich experience and credentials in high-speed railway construction. We are ready to take an active part in high-speed rail development in h ailand, because this will facilitate the movement of goods and personnel in the region and enhance h ailand’srole as a regional transport hub. China and h ailand will vigorously carry out coopera- tion in electricity, power grid, water conservancy and renew- able energy. As our economic and personnel exchanges get closer, China will seriously consider the establishment of a yuan clearing bank in h ai- and to create conditions for Chinese and h ai companies to increase cross-border yuan trade settlement.Our two countries share a solid cultural and people- to-people bond. In 2012, there were nearly three mil- lion mutual visits between the mainland of China and Thailand. And the number has risen dramatically since the start of this year. Chinese has become a popular second foreign language among h ai friends while Thai cuisine, TV series and sports are win- ning the hearts of more people in China. Jointly sponsored activities such as the “Two Lands One Heart” gala and the “Happy Chinese Spring Festival” in Bangkok have l ourished over the years and become bridges for heart- to-heart communication between our two peoples.We are full of coni dence in the future growth of China- h ailand relations. We hope that China-h ailand friend- ship will keep surging forward like the Yangtze River and the Chao Phraya River.
